  1. Enrolled Design Registration in India Design is defined as the aesthetic appearance of a product. It consists of 2D patterns and composition and 3D shapes and combos of 3D and 2D designs. Is there a need for design registration in India? The reason for registering your design is: • Gives your design statutory or territorial rights. • It safeguards your design from being reproduced, sold, imported or distributed, or imitated. • Once registered, you have a monopoly over the usage of the design for ten years that can be extended for another five years. • A registered design gives it a unique selling point or USP. • It becomes an asset What are the criteria for design registration in India? 1. The design should be novel. 2. The design must not be published before in India or any other country. 3. The design should be distinguishably different from known designs published before. 4. The design should be visually appealing because it is judged solely based on the view. 5. The design need not be a technical aspect of the product. The Designs Act, 2000 regulates design registration in India. It was published on 12th May 2000, in the Gazette of India. The Act repealed the prior Designs Act, 1911.
