  1. (1) Different co-morbidity in AD patients and control subjects at initial hospital stay Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and risk factors for CVD, accounted for a conspicuously smaller proportion of medical co-morbidities in the AD population compared to controls. (2) Univariate predictors of mortality in the AD population Myocardial infarction and ischemic heart disease were the most relevant single disease contributors of later in-hospital mortality in the AD population in univariate analysis. (3) Independent predictors of mortality in the AD population Pneumonia was particularly relevant as a predictor of hospital mortality in AD patients. Ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction may be related to pneumonia. This suggests that CVD — or relevant risk factors, such as hypertension and type II diabetes mellitus and depression —may be initially under recognized in AD patients.
