  2. Introduction Iceland started to issue the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) on 1 May 2005. The Icelandic EHIC:

  3. Statistics • Population of Iceland: 317.630 people (Statistics Iceland 2010-03-16). • Tourists in Iceland during 2009: 493.941 tourists. • Tourists from EU Member States 2009: 322.076 minimum.

  4. Statistics • Persons with Icelandic health insurance 317.630. • EHIC´s issued from 1 May 2005: 243.600. • EHIC´s issued in 2009: 25.624. • Persons with valid EHIC issued by Iceland: 59.260. • Invoiced claims. Outstanding balance pr. 31.12.2009 was ISK 127.736.961.

  5. Main practical issues • Member State unable to locate the holder. • Holder no longer insured in Member State. • Late replies. • Late or no payment of claims.

  6. EHIC to 3rd country nationals? • No problems regarding practical administration foreseen. • Certain changes in computer systems necessary.

  7. At last: • The Ministry of Welfare is responsible for the EHIC. • The Icelandic Health Insurance is the competent authority for national health insurance and administration of the issuance of EHIC. • EHIC is mainly issued on the basis of a remote application via the web site of the Icelandic Health Insurance. • Administrative structures in place and operating. • No major problems foreseen in connection with membership.
