  2. A New Identity – A New Ambition Colossians 3:1-4 Jesus + Nothing = Everything

  3. A New Identity and Ambition • 1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. 3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. (Colossians 3:1-4)

  4. A New Identity • 1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above… 3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:1a, 3)

  5. A New Identity • 1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:1-4)

  6. A New Identity • 5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin. (Romans 6:5-7)

  7. A New Identity • 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. (Romans 6:8-10) • Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. (Romans 6:11)

  8. A New Identity • 1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God… 3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:1a, 3) • When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. (Colossians 3:4)

  9. A New Identity • “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” (Galatians 2:20)

  10. A New Identity • 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus… (Ephesians 2:4-6)

  11. A New Identity • 1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above… 3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:1a, 3)

  12. A New Ambition • Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. (Colossians 3:1) • Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. (Colossians 3:2)

  13. A New Ambition • “I know of no other way to triumph over sin long-term, than to gain a distaste for it because of a superior satisfaction in Jesus.”- John Piper, Desiring God

  14. A New Ambition • 7 But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ… (Philippians 3:7-8)

  15. A New Ambition • 1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. (Colossians 3:1-2)

  16. A New Ambition • 15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. (1 John 2:15-16)

  17. A New Ambition • Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. (1 Peter 2:11) • For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. (Philippians 1:21)

  18. A New Mindset • 1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. (Colossians 3:1-2)

  19. A New Mindset • “If you read history, you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next. The Apostles themselves, who set on foot the conversion of the Roman Empire, the great men who built up the Middle Ages, the English Evangelicals who abolished the Slave Trade, all left their mark on Earth, precisely because their minds were occupied with Heaven. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at Heaven and you will get earth thrown in; aim at earth and you will get neither.” - C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

  20. A New Mindset • 8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. 9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:8-9)

  21. A New Mindset • 1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:1-2)

  22. A New Mindset • Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. (Colossians 3:2)

  23. A New Mindset • 1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. 3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:1-3)
