The Dutch settlers in South Africa, or Boers (farmers) gave an ultimatum to the British because they did not want the British to send more reinforcements to threaten them • The British wanted the Boer Republic for its diamonds and gold • The fighting started on October 11th, 1899 What Happened

The British started to burn all of the farms that Boers had taken refuge in • The first concentration camps were for the British to put the women and children they had taken from the farms • The camps were dirty and full of disease • Around 25,000 women and children died in these camps • The British had a very strong military so the Boers decided to surrender their land for the safety of their families What Happened

  5. The Boer War highlighted Britain’s need for allies in Europe • Before the war they had no allies • It also highlighted Britain’s need to change foreign policy • Britain wouldn’t have been able to defend themselves if other European forced intervened • Africa’s culture Legacy
