How & Why We Exist
  • 28E agreement with Iowa Department of Education
    • Contract between branch of state government (IDOE) and another organization (IHSAA) giving the organization authority to perform certain tasks (govern boys’ interscholastic athletics)
    • IHSAA, IGHSAU, IHSMA, IHSSA are all registered with IDOE to provide services via a 28E agreement

  • First set of rules drafted in 1903 by Iowa High School Principals’ Club
    • Consistency of rules and enforcement of those rules
  • Rules were officially & unanimously adopted by this group on December 28, 1904
  • IHSAA was officially formed on that date and first Board of Control members elected
  • IHSAA is organization of member schools
    • Membership is voluntary
    • Consistency of rules, access to programs, opportunity for representation on committees, BOC, Representative Council
  • FYI – 1st state tournament was in track & field in 1906
