Take a few minutes to review chapters 1-4 • You will have a quiz on these chapter in the next few minutes!
Do Now • Ponder an answer to the following question: • What do you think that modern Americans value? • Find someone from the opposite side of the room with who to share your answer!
Media • Media refers to all electronic digital means and print or artistic visuals used to transmit messages. It is a means of communication.
Literacy • Literacy is the ability to encode and decode symbols, and to synthesize and analyze messages.
Media Literacy • Media literacy is the ability to encode and decode the symbols transmitted via media.
Why Study Media Literacy? • Understand how media messages create meaning • Identify who created a particular media message? • Recognize what the media maker wants us to believe or do • Name the persuasive appeals used • Become advocates for change in our media system
Another Film Adaptation • Now, using the same critical thinking questions, let’s answer them by watching the film adaptation for “Chapter V” of The Great Gatsby directed by BazLuhrmann.
