The Oracle relational database management system (RDBMS) was the initial product offering and is at the center of most Oracle product installations. This product is designed to provide the facilities to store and retrieve information in a variety of formats. The data entrusted to Oracle is stored in a series of data files on disk drives of the computer that is running the Oracle RDBMS. It would be nice if the simple categorization structure described previously covered all possible DBA job descriptions. However, there are many nuances in the roles and responsibilities that should be considered in light of your talents and the “culture” found in your organization. If nothing else, studying other people’s work environments is an interesting pastime. When you are a consultant, you need something to get you through certain routine assignments. DBA is usually the person best suited to lay out the disks, processes, and memory in a way that optimizes the database. Many Oracle functions such as loading software require access to system administrative privileges. Balanced against the advantages of having all the power (system and database) are the limitations of hours in the day and capability of learning both the operating system and the database management system. An unfortunate problem encountered in a lot of shops that are down-sizing is that database and system administrators are often asked to lay out and install a system after having only a minimal amount of vendor training and little practical experience.
