Question: What is a codicil?
Answer: A codicil is a document that amends an existing will. Codicils are somewhat rare these days. Before the use of computers in law offices, the preparation of a will was a labour-intensive task. It would cost a lot in terms of time and money to do a new will simply to change the name of an executor or to change a minor gift within the will. Codicils were designed for these purposes. Today, a lawyer usually saves a draft of your will that can be easily modified at a later date. For this reason, codicils are rarely used today.
