  1. Rethinking Scale: More than Upping the Numbers SPROCKETS Network Conference March 8, 2013

  2. A Framework for Scale in the Context of Afterschool in St. Paul • Spread: more programs and program slots • Depth: going deeper with what is already in place; strengthening and/or scaling best practices • Sustainability: the notion that what you are doing will have value over time, and that you can pay for it • Shift in ownership of reform: shared ownership of system functions, and a shared advocacy agenda for afterschool as a whole; a shift from an individual to a collective mindset

  3. You can approach scalein different ways • Convert Bricks to Clicks • Build Networks • Use Intermediaries • Develop Talent • Blend Service with Advocacy • Alter Attitudes and Perceptions • Strengthen the Sector as a Whole How you do it depends on what you want to scale…

  4. Key Questions to Consider When thinking about Scale • What is core – and what is nice but not necessary? • What do the youth and families of St. Paul need? • What are the costs of your approach? • What additional training would be needed? • What are the possible barriers to scale?

  5. Discussion Questions • Do these dimensions of scale resonate with your thinking? • What aspect(s) of scale are you working on? • What role could Sprockets play in scaling afterschool in St. Paul?
