  2. For this module I was offered a place working at the Sikh channel for the full 20 days required. • The Sikh Channel commenced national television on 14th April 2009. • It provides education and religious programmes for Sikhs as well as non Sikhs. • It is the first T.V channel to focus on the essence of Sikhism providing a national television platform free to air for the Sikh Faith. • The Sikh Channel offers a wide variety of spiritual programming including Kirtan, Katha, Religious Discourse, chat shows and children’s programming the content of our broadcast will feature Sikhism at its core.

  3. What I was expected to do • Set up studio • Check camera • camera angles • white balance • focused camera • Sound check • Vision mixing • Filming on location • Set up talkbacks • Editing • Ridging lighting • Producing new ideas

  4. What I learnt & gained from this placement From this placement I experienced how stressful and time consuming filming on location can be, as everything from setting up the set to setting up the camera, sound, lighting and to vision mix can be difficult as you are working under pressure and you only have that one chance to get it right. I learnt that each second counts within a media industry especially when you have a live show to go out on air, as time has to be correct. I also learnt how to use the sound desk properly so that the sound was right and was coming up to a set mark on the PGM monitor. I was given the chance to learn how to vision mix live shows Whilst under pressure from vision mixing I was given the chance to technical direct I learnt how serious and hard this could be as timing is key.

Vision mixing for live shows was something I was given the chance to do from day one so I was comfortable with it but vision mixing whilst filming on location was something different but I managed to get it done. I also learnt how to ridge lights for each programme filmed in studio and connect to the right channel. By the end of the placement I was able to edit on Final Cut Pro quickly than before. I was also taught to set microphones into the right channel and sound check properly.

  6. Team work Whilst on this placement at the Sikh Channel I wasn’t really put into a team to get the work done. It was very rarely were I had to work as a team. Most of the time I was expected to work on my own especially whilst in studio as I was given the morning shift. I was expected to set the studio up, check lighting, cameras and sound so that it was ready for the 12pm shows that was to be on air live each day. I was needed to work in a team when I was to go out with the production crew out on location to film, as there was much more work needed to be done at one time.
