Disciple Building Sharing A68 Abraham/Jephthah, At the beginning, the two are the same/different, Can Jephthah have a second chance?
Preface • In this section, we will mention Abraham and Jephthah’s personal performance in their spiritual experience. We will first describe the general process and compare the two people’s experience from the starting point. What are the similarities in the results? What's the result? In addition, we will mention whether there can be a turning point in this matter.
Starting • Gen. 22:2 “Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”” • Judges 11:3030 And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord, and said, “If You will indeed deliver the people of Ammon into my hands, • Judges 11:3131 then it will be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the people of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.”
Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac • Gen. 22:7 “But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”” • Gen. 22:8 “And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.” • Gen. 22:9 “Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.”
Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac • Gen. 22:10 “And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.” • Gen. 22:11 “But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.”” • Gen. 22:12 “And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.””
Battle of Jephthah • Judges 11:3232 So Jephthah advanced toward the people of Ammon to fight against them, and the Lord delivered them into his hands. • Judges 11:3434 When Jephthah came to his house at Mizpah, there was his daughter, coming out to meet him with timbrels and dancing; and she was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter. • Judges 11:3535 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low! You are among those who trouble me! For I have given my word to the Lord, and I cannot go back on it.”
Battle of Jephthah • Judges 11:3636 So she said to him, “My father, if you have given your word to the Lord, do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth, because the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the people of Ammon.” • Judges 11:3737 Then she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: let me alone for two months, that I may go and wander on the mountains and bewail my virginity, my friends and I.” • Judges 11:3939 And it was so at the end of two months that she returned to her father, and he carried out his vow with her which he had vowed. She knew no man. And it became a custom in Israel
Similarities between the two • Are all dedicated to my beloved • All violate the Ten Commandments: • Exodus 20:13「You shall not murder.」 • The sacrifices are agreed to be offered • Sacrifices can resist • Are related to Jehovah God
The difference between the two • Different source • Abraham offered Isaac from God's request • Jephthah’sdaughter was offered by his vow with God • The results are different: Abraham's son: Isaacdid not die • Jephthah'sdaughter is dead
What did God say afterwards • Gen. 22:15 “Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven,” • Gen. 22:16 “and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son—” • Gen. 22:17 “blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.” • Gen. 22:18 “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
What did God say afterwards • Judges 11:4040 that the daughters of Israel went four days each year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.
Who gets the glory • Gen. 22:16 “and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son—” • Luke. 14:26 “‘If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.” • Jehovah, Abraham, Isaac • Jephta, daughter of Jephta
Can Jephthah have a second chance? • Dear Abba Father, thank you for allowing us to defeat our enemies. I now want to abide by my agreement with you, but there is one part of the agreement I swear with you that violates your will. Don’t kill. And only you can make life dead. I now put our agreement in front of you. Please modify our agreement so that I can not only realize my agreement, but also enable your holy name to be fully glorified. The above prayer is in the holy name of Jesus Christ
