  1. Choosing the Right Size Range Hood & Surround

  2. It’s always a good idea to add a range hood to your kitchen, as it can help keep the air and the surfaces in the kitchen cleaner by trapping the fumes created when you cook and expelling them. But they don’t come in a one-size-fits-all capacity, and knowing what size of hood to buy isn’t always obvious. If you’re searching for the right hood and range hood cover for your kitchen, it pays to find one that’s wider than your cooktop for the following reasons:

  3. • A wide range hood provides better coverage. When you’re using the burners on the far sides of your cooktop, the fumes, grease, and carbon monoxide aren’t always sucked up efficiently when the range hood isn’t wide enough. This means you’re not getting the best out of your range hood and will quickly begin to notice the walls and ceilings becoming coated with grease and the air not smelling so fresh and clean.

  4. • A wide range hood uses less energy. You could be forgiven for assuming that a smaller range hood uses less energy than a bigger one, but in fact the very opposite is true. When a range hood is not wide enough to cover the entire cooktop, it needs to use a lot more energy to do its job. Not only does this result in higher energy bills, but it can have a negative impact on the hood’s lifespan, too.

  5. • A wide range hood responds more quickly. With the extra surface area that a wide range hood has, it’s able to respond far faster to any issues such as smoke, grease, and fumes. Even when a smaller range hood is turned on to its highest setting, it’ll take longer to work with its smaller surface area, making it less efficient and less responsive when you need it to be. Why should you add a surround to your range hood? While a hood range surround is by no means essential, it can help with the kitchen's overall aesthetic. It can either be integrated with your existing cabinetry for a more seamless look or made into a feature so that it stands out and draws the eye.

  6. Here are a few reasons to add a surround to your range hood: • Aesthetic appeal The right type of surround, such as a stunning and sleek precast concrete surround, can transform a basic hood into a thing of architectural beauty, and who wouldn’t want that in their kitchen? • Integration with cabinets It may be the case that your range hood doesn’t align perfectly with your cabinetry, which can look a little off in a kitchen. By adding a surround that matches your cabinetry, you can fill in those ugly gaps and create a look that’s far more cohesive and fluid.

  7. • Covering imperfections If the wall around your range hood is uneven or unsightly for any reason, a hood surround can conceal those imperfections. Before adding a range hood surround, however, it’s important to ensure that it in no way obstructs the airflow to the hood or makes it hard to use the controls. It’s usually best to seek professional help when installing a surround, and if you’re buying from a company specializing in them, they’ll, of course, come and install it for you.
