  1. Winick 80th

  2. Today – Herman’s Contributions Described in Detail • No discussion of Herman and Seb’s brilliance in establishing SSRP • Concept – hundreds of users per month cycling through • Academia • Government labs. • Industry • Not for annointed few, like then-existing neutron facilities • Develop user support, as all instrumentation was new • Proposal review committee • But funding for only 2 years and quite insufficient for task • NSF uncertain

  3. Brilliance - 2 • Originated PRT system • Bachrach & Brown on Grasshopper • Eisenberger, Lytle, Stern, Sayers on EXAFS line • Vic Rehn (China Lake Naval Weapons Lab.) on soft X-ray line • Nick Webb (Cal. Tech.) • Lindau (Spicer’s group) • Would cause Seb grief as others users did not understand • Could not have built SSRP without it

  4. Brilliance - 3 • Incorporating industrial scientists right from start • Made clear that SSRP would serve industry • Many good ideas and science • Effect on graduate students • Incorporating graduate students • Hunter, Kincaid, Pianetta • Made clear that SSRP would serve students • Led to rapid spread of SR • Later, injection design, construction, commissioning • Students later played major role in other facilities, as well as SSRL

  5. Herman obsessed with safety • CEA bubble chamber experience for both of us • Appropriate for SSRP as dangers were plentiful • Safety walks • Small hutches • Person wouldn’t fit with beam on • Frustrated users as it was hard to align equipment • One user • We gained experience and made things easier • Superb safety record a tribute to Herman, the SSRL safety officers and the floor staff

  6. 5 Years Later • Firmly established science and community • Beam time rarer than NSF funding • NSF disgruntled as grantees not getting time • Users anxious for time, see PRT time as obstacle • Herman and Seb obtain NSF funding for 2nd beam line and building expansion • Seb goes back to science after brilliant streak as director • SSRP becomes SSRL • Even so, my feelings about National Science Board • Now, must deal with that tendency on the NSB • I became director

  7. Talks Today About Herman • Encouraging SR science • Pushing wigglers and undulators • Encouraging SR facilities around the world • Human rights efforts • I will not repeat • Instead, things closer to me

  8. Accelerator Physics • Herman bull-dogged against my initial resistance • I relented • Impact on SSRL • Constant SPEAR improvement, particularly once fully dedicated • Independent injector • Reduced SPEAR emittance • Initial LCLS development • Students educated and contributing • I became staunch advocate • Extremely important that we remain strong

  9. Controversies • Joy of our conversations • First wiggler – many doubters – we go ahead • Surface EXAFS and Angiography • Overrule PRP and peer review • UC/Weapons Labs beam line • HEP faculty petition against • Demonstrations on campus • We hang firm on use of PRP to judge science • Undulator beam lines on PEP • LCLS • We didn’t always agree, but shared values
