  1. Reflections and Next Steps Dr. Denise P. Gibbs, Director Alabama Scottish Rite Foundation Learning Centers Gibbsdenise@aol.com 256-990-5650

  2. For my LEA, what does all this mean and where do we go from here?

  3. What is RTI? the practice of providing high-quality research-based instruction/intervention matched to student needs and using learning rate over time and level of performance to inform educational decisions

  4. From ALSDE RTI Guidelines: Four Core RTI Principles • Students receive high-quality, research-based instruction by qualified staff in their general education setting. • Use of a multi-tiered model of service delivery facilitates differentiated instruction and early intervening services for struggling learners. • Movement between tiers should be guided by a data-driven decision-making process. • Universal screening and progress monitoring are the basis for instructional decisions.

  5. …..Matched to student needs?

  6. Do your students…… • Struggle to meet basic academic standards? • More problems in some content areas than in others? • Show growth across all skill/ability levels? • ALL students are moving up (not just low getting higher)?

  7. Do your students…… • Exhibit considerable behavioral issues? • Much time devoted to “crowd control” and discipline • Exhibit no problems what so ever! • Lake Wobegon?

  8. What “pieces” of the RTI framework do you have “in the bag”?

  9. Do you already have…. • High-quality, research-based instruction provided by qualified staff? • High quality = 80% rule • Research-based = all that we have learned today • Qualified staff = Credentials + PD • If not, what are the obstacles? • Not knowing? • You mean, other than money?

  10. Do you already have in place…. • a multi-tiered model of service delivery? • Core instruction (Tier 1) • Interventions (Tier 2) • Intensive interventions (Tier 3) • If not, what are the obstacles? • Research-based instructional and intervention materials • Professional development to equip faculty to provide instruction/interventions with fidelity • Time to schedule all these things! • Understanding what this stuff looks like in elementary, middle and high schools! • Other obstacles?

  11. Do you already ensure that…. • Movement between the tiers is guided by a data-driven decision-making process • If not, what are the obstacles? • Need to establish definite system-wide criteria? • Need to make sure that team members making these decisions are skilled in the… • analysis of data • application of the system’s criteria • specifics of interventions • group decision-making process • Other obstacles?

  12. Do you already have in place…. • universal screening and progress monitoring • use this information as the basis for instructional decisions? • If no, what are the obstacles? • What tools to use and what skills to assess? • How to interpret results for decision making? • How to set measurable goals and to know when we are getting there or not?

  13. Where does my LEA need to go from here?

  14. We need to…. • ______ • ______ • ______ • ______ • ______
