  1. Welcome to JIFF !

  2. Moving Data From Here to There,In a JIFFy – So to Speak. It’s the same thing, only different.

  3. What We’ll Cover in This Session • Meet JIFF! • Sources of Input Data • Creating an Input File by pasting in Text • Creating an Input File by keying in data into JIFF • Hands-on: Upload input for TRN0750 • How to work with input data from an e-mail • How to retrieve CMS files off the mainframe

  4. JIFF stands for: JOBS INPUT FILE FACILITY Web Application that replaces the mainframe process of sending data files to “OP2”. (PARM information remains the same). So, what’s JIFF?

  5. MainFrame Edit file in CMS Move Data: Sendfile to OP2 iSeries Edit file in NotePad * Move Data: JIFF Web Application It’s the Same Thing, Only Different • * A “Plain Text” editor; WordPad could also be used • if “saved as” a .txt file. • Note: Microsoft WORD is NOT acceptable

  6. The mainframe-based JOBS (batch job request system) has been ported over to the iSeries computing system. It will still be used and function identically on the new system. Since you will no longer have an “A DISK” mainframe storage area, JIFF was created as a way for you to supply input file data for batch jobs. JOBS and JIFF

  7. JIFF allows you to either type input data or paste it in. Most input file screens include a template, ruler or instructions to help you enter data correctly. Up to 150K of text may be pasted into JIFF’s input page (Larger files may need to be FTP’d). JOBS and JIFF

  8. You can access JIFF through My Work: How to Access JIFF

  9. You may also access JIFF directly at: https://www.secure.smsu.edu/jobs/JOB0010.asp How to Access JIFF

  10. Sources of Input Data – Where does it come from ? • Text output from Excel or other programs • Email Attachments • Files that were FTP’d from an outside source • Data in a File on your PC or a server • A text file that you create from scratch

  11. Then What? • Open, edit, and copy data with NotePad. • Create a new Job Input File using JIFF. • Paste the data from NotePad into JIFF. • Use the assigned file name for JOBS request.

  12. For Example... • We’ll use a Journal Entry as input to ACC0700. • Data was created as tab-delimited from Excel. (File is sitting on a user’s PC) • We’ll move it to the iSeries using JIFF, by selecting, copying and pasting the text. • Then, we’ll request the JOB as usual.

  13. This file was created as a “Tab-delimited” text file from Excel. “Tab” characters are embedded within this data. Note that JIFF changes tabs to spaces by default. However, JIFF knows to keep the tab characters in certain jobs (like this one!)

  14. Note the Menu Options and Shortcut Keystrokes. We want to “Select All” the data.

  15. All the data has been selected. Now it needs to be copied to the Clipboard.

  16. Copying data to the Clipboard • Copy data to the Windows clipboard: • Choose “Edit”, “Copy” from the menu - OR - • Hold down the “Control” key on one of the bottom corners; Press the letter “C” at the same time. The data will stay on the clipboard until you copy something else over it.

  17. Known Tab-Delimited Input Jobs • ACC0700, ACC0701 – Journal Entries • ACC0710, ACC0711 – Allotments • ACC2000, ACC2001 – Print Shop/Copy This • PAY1400, 1410, 1411 – Payroll/West Plains Notes: • These jobs use input created by Excel. JIFF will automatically retain the tab characters in the input data for these jobs. • Most jobs simply require that text be aligned in columns, and any tab characters (pasted in from NotePad) are converted to spaces.

  18. Creating the Input File • Enter JIFF through My Work or use the URL. • Sign on with your PIN. JIFF translates your SSN to your iSeries ID for authentication and access to particular jobs.

  19. Enter Job Name Here Click Here to Proceed to Create Input Data File List of Input Files Already Created That You have Permission to See Highlight an Existing Job and Click View to See What Has Been Done.

  20. Read all Notes and Reminders Place Cursor at Top; Paste using Ctrl-V

  21. Verify Data, and Save File You may want to scroll down to verify all data is present Remember to save your file!

  22. Voila! Here is the File Name of Your JOBS Request ! (You have just moved the data like “sendfile… to OP2” used to)

  23. Your Job Input File is Created • You have just created a data input file for the JOB you plan to request. • It resides in the INPUT Library on the iSeries. • It is identified by the file name provided by JIFF.

  24. Highlight it by dragging your cursor over it, then Copy it to the Clipboard with Ctrl-C Note: This will overwrite what is on your Clipboard.

  25. Use the file name provided by JIFF in your JOB Request Enter parm information as always

  26. Input File Names • Note that JIFF’s file names are always the same as the JOB name, except for a number (01, 02, 03, etc.) that gets added to the end. • For instance “GJ DATA” is no longer a valid file name for the job ACC0700, but ACC070001 and ACC070002 are. • You must use the file name provided by JIFF for the Job that you request.

  27. Another Way to Create an Input File • Key data directly into JIFF

  28. Enter the Job Number Click CREATE to continue

  29. There is a pattern to follow 901234567 453287654 909876543 654287654 Key Data Directly on the Screen. Remember to save the file and make note of the file name.

  30. Hands-on ! – Create an Input Filefor TRN0750 Here’s what we’ll be doing: • Use JIFF to create input for job #TRN0750. • Key in data according to job instructions. • Save the file and make note of the file name. • Run JOBS and specify the new file as input.

  31. Extra Topics( no extra charge! ) • How to work with data from an e-mail attachment • How to retrieve CMS files off the mainframe • CMS files that were sent to your account will now be Emailed • Question & Answer Time

  32. What about E-mail? • You may receive data via e-mail that you want to use as input. (Again, CMS files become email). • If this is a file that the iSeries needs to retrieve from a file server, and the file is “ready to go”, you can simply copy it to the server. • Large text files (> 10,000 lines or > 150k) may need to be transferred this way, instead of being copy/pasted into JIFF.

  33. “Drag and Drop” from e-mail to PC or file server. .

  34. once upon a time ONCE UPONA T Click your “Other” Mouse Button to show the Drop-Down Menu. Open the File with NotePad Verify that the data is as expected, or make any necessary changes to it.

  35. What about my CMS files? • Your “A DISK” will no longer exist, so you must move your CMS files to another location! • Use an FTP client such as WS-FTP to connect to your “A Disk” on the mainframe. • If you need to get WS-FTP installed, please contact User Support. • Save the file to \\Bear1 or some other file server (this ensures that your data is backed up).

  36. FTP vma.smsu.edu –use your CMS ID and password

  37. Select “ASCII” and Get your file

  38. JIFF Moves Data to the iSeries • Receive the data via e-mail, Excel output, FTP, etc. • Edit/Change the data in a text editor. • Copy and paste data into JIFF. • Save the file, and use the JIFF file name in your JOBS request. - or - • Key data directly into JIFF, according to instructions supplied with the template. • Save the file, and use the JIFF file name in your JOBS request.

  39. What have I learned? • Input data comes from a variety of sources. • It must be saved or handled as plain text. • JIFF is the new way to upload input files for the JOBS batch submittal system. • Data can be copy/pasted or keyed directly into JIFF. • Large input files may need to be “dropped off” to a “pick-up” folder on a file server. • CMS input files need to be moved off the mainframe.

  40. Can I do this? • YES!

  41. HOW ?? • The same way you eat an elephant – • One byte at a time.

  42. Thank You! ... For taking the time to attend today’s training. Questions or comments?
