Acid Base Neutralization. Prepared for A&P at FGCU. Terms – Strong Acid. An acid is a proton donor. A strong acid is an acid that completely dissociates into hydrogen ions and anions in a solution. For example: HCl ---> H+ + Cl-. Terms – Strong Base.

  2. Terms – Strong Acid • An acid is a proton donor. A strong acid is an acid that completely dissociates into hydrogen ions and anions in a solution. For example: HCl ---> H+ + Cl-

  3. Terms – Strong Base • A base is a proton acceptor. A strong base is a base that completely dissociates in an aqueous solution and yields hydroxide ions. For example: • NaOH + H2O -> Na1+ + OH1- + H2O

  4. Terms – Neutralization • A Neutralization reaction is a double replacement reaction in which an acid and a base react to produce salt and water. For example: • HCl + NaOH > NaCl + H2O

  5. Terms – Caustic/Corrosive • Corrosive and Caustic substances are substances that can permanently damage or destroy human tissue. Corrosive is generally used when referring to acids, but is also used when referring to bases. Caustic is used only when referring to bases.
