  1. Localized Mobility Management for 3GPP All IP Network ~ with New Access Technology~ Katsutoshi Nishida NTT DoCoMo Inc. nishidak@nttdocomo.co.jp

  2. Glossary • 3GPP Terms • Inter-AS-MM: Inter-Access System Mobility Management • PCRF: Policy and Charging Rules Function • HSS: Home Subscriber Server • GPRS: General Packet Radio Service • GERAN: GSM Edge Radio Access Network (2G radio) • UTRAN: Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (3G radio) • HSDPA: High Speed Downlink Packet Access • LTE: Long-Term Evolution (3G radio technology evolution) • NGN Terms • DVB: Digital Video Broadcast • ISDB-T: Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting Terrestrial • PSS: Packet-switched Streaming Service • MSI: Mobile Support system for mobility at the Inter-access level which can support seamless hand over • FMC: Fixed Mobile Convergence

  3. Specifications and system development: HSDPA, Uplink Enhancement Commercial deployment: Release 99 Release 5&6 Long-term Evolution R99 Launch Evolved UTRAN~ 3GPP New Access Technology ~ • The Long-term technology evolution for keeping the continuous growth of 3GPP wireless link technology towards … • high data rate • low latency • packet optimized Technical study : Evolved UTRAN 4G 3G 2G 1G 1980s 1990s 2000s 2010s 2020s Release 99 - initial UTRAN specification

  4. LTE Target Specification Release 99 Release 5&6 Long-term evolution Spectrum 3G spectrum (2GHz band and the additional bands) Radio aspect W-CDMA HSDPA, Uplink Enhancement Evolved UTRAN Radio Access Direct-Sequence CDMA New elements (OFDM, MIMO, etc) UTRAN RTT Several 100s msec Several 10s to 100 ms < 10ms Carrier Bandwidth 5MHz 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10, 20MHz Data Rate 384kbps - 2Mbps 14.4Mbps 50Mbps (uplink) 100Mbps (downlink) Mobility - 350km/h • 120 km/h (at least 384kbps) - 120km/h NW aspect Circuit Switch and Packet Switch Packet Switch only • 3GPP has started to discuss about requirements and specifications for LTE. • Standardization work will be completed by mid 2007.

  5. Current network still remains Target of ALL IP Core NW Evolved UTRAN New Access Technology ALL IP Network Architecture~ Work of 3GPP: System Architecture Evolution ~ ALL IP Core Network Architecture • AIPN includes IP core network and provides IP Multimedia services by IMS platform. • AIPN IP core NW supports the mobility required by cellular operators, e.g., seamless mobility GERAN Internet GPRS Core UTRAN PCRF2 HSS AAA interface Evolved Access Inter-AS MM Evolved UTRAN Evolved Packet Core IP Services (IMS, etc…) Internet WLAN 3GPP IP Access

  6. Next Generation Network (NGN) Architecture~ Work of ETSI TISPAN and ITU-T FGNGN ~ An example of NGN realization • NGN includes IP core network and provides IP Multimedia services by IMS platform. • NGN IP core NW may support nomadicmobility for FMC. • NGN IP core NW may also provide seamless mobility for real-time traffic with MSI. Internet GERAN GPRS Core MSI UTRAN Core transport functions DVB/ ISDB-T RAN IMS WiMax RAN Metro Ethernet Fixed (e.g. DSL) WiFi Hotspot ETSI: European Telecommunications Standards Institute TISPAN: Telecommunications and Internet converged Services and Protocols For Advanced Networking ITU-T: International Telecommunication Union- Telecommunication Standardization Sector FGNGN: Focus Group Next Generation Network Mobility management for AIPN can be used for NGN mobility as well

  7. Expectation for NETLMM Protocol From 3GPP Work • Future Network with Evolved UTRAN needs to transport huge amount of packets efficiently • Network will be IP based network (All IP core Network), to receive the advanced features of the Internet technologies. • All IP core network provides mobility with; • Seamlessness (high quality handover) • Support for heterogeneous wireless access technologies • Network Controlled • Efficient use of wireless resources etc. From NGN Work • To realize FMC, the same level of requirements exists in NGN as well We expect NETLMM protocol to satisfy the needs of ALL IP core Network and Next Generation Network
