  2. What is PISA PISA - Programme for International Students Assessment (Since 2000) OECD - organization for Economics Co-operation & Development (since 1979) Triennial International survey. Evaluate Education system globally by measuring skills and knowledge of 15 year old students. Over 70 countries are participating Survey - Science, Reading and Mathematics. Application of knowledge in unfamiliar setting both within and outside the school environment. Application of Knowledge to real life situations and be equipped for society

  3. India in PISA India participated in 2009. 16 thousand students from Himachal Pradesh & TamilNaduparticipated from 400 schools. Secured 72 rank out of 74 participated countries. China (Shanghai School) first time participated in PISA. Topper in Mathematics and science. India boycotted PISA – 2012 & 2015.

  4. Highlights of PISA 2021 Core domain Mathematics and one innovative domain – creative thinking. Students will be expected to fill 35 minute background questionnaire together with the 120 minutes test. Since 2015 - computer based assessment. Option of pen and paper based Assessment is also provided . School Principals, Teachers & Parents will also fill questionnaires for additional information.

PISA is a competency based assessment which unlike content-based assessment, measures the extent to which students have acquired key competencies that are essential for full participation in modern societies. Why PISA- how will it help India • It would lead to recognition and acceptability of Indian students and prepare them for the global economy in the 21st century. • Learnings from participation in PISA will help to introduce competency based examination reforms in the school system and help move away from rote learning. • The CBSE and NCERT will be part of the process and activities leading to the actual test.

What is tested Reading Literacy. : defined as understanding, using reflecting on and engaging with written texts, in order to achieve one’s goals, develop one’s knowledge , potential and participate in society. Mathematics Literacy: is defined as the individual’s capacity for formulating, employing and interpreting Mathematics in a variety of contexts. Scientific Literacy: is defined as the ability to understand the characteristics of science and the significance of science in our modern world, to apply scientific knowledge, Identify issues, describe scientific phenomena, draw conclusions based on evidence, and the willingness to reflect on and engage with scientific ideas and subjects. Components of PISA Paper/ Computer Test Students’ Questionnaire Principals’ Questionnaire A 45 minutes questionnaire will be given to students that will include questions about their family background including social & economic. Also , questions to test student’s engagement, attitude and motivation towards learning, family environment etc. A 45 minutes questionnaire to be answered by the administrators of the participating schools. The questionnaire will include questions in regards to aspect of school. The student’s engagement in class, attitude towards school etc. A 120 minutes test that will be administered either through paper or computer Apart from these mandatory components there are other optional questionnaires that the country may choose to implement for the teachers and parents. Each of 300minutes.

Participating in PISA is an important mile-stone and carries considerable implications for review of transactional pedagogies and assessment frameworks Data points and analysis for policy and other decision makers at all levels of the education system – teachers, students, principals, parents, etc. Identify indicators and other factors which influence learning levels of students PISA 2021: Implications for India Assess educational status across language, Mathematics, Science, and other innovative domains in comparison with other countries Re-design classroom pedagogies and curriculum such that students can apply knowledge gained in the classroom in unfamiliar settings, thus, equipping them for real world challenges

  12. Field Trial(FT) • To be conducted in March-May 2020. • 25 schools and 36 students in each school i.e. 900 students to be assessed through 18 forms to be used for testing 50 students each. • Exact dates to be chosen for field trial

  13. PISA 2021 officially called Main Survey • To be conducted in April 2021 5250 students (150 schools x 35 students) will be assessed on the following subjects:- • Maths and Science (47% students) • Maths and Reading (47% students) • Reading and Science (6%students)

  14. ProblemsandIssues • Too much text/reading. • Too much information. • Learners don't know how to answer. • The questions are long and presented in unfamiliar layouts. • Learners don't understand the questions. • They give up too easily. • They are afraid to be wrong.

Data Interpretation:A cursory look on any PISA items reveals the importance ofinterpretation in various forms. Therefore, practice is required toenable the students to interpret the data in various forms such as:-i. Graphical Dataii. Mapsiii. Time Tableiv. Charts &v. Other Matrices2. Reading and Comprehension:PISA items are quite lengthy in nature hence, students shouldhave the ability to read fast and comprehend the subject contentquickly.3. Activities based on silent reading:There are many forms of reading such as abstracting, scanning,skimming, reading between lines, distinguishing betweenrelevance and irrelevance. Hence, students should be exposed toall the possible aspects silent reading.

Note Making:Making note while reading a large passage requires to identify thetopic sentence, keywords, subtitles reference points etc.5. Puzzle and Readings:Questions in general are like puzzles which require thinking out ofthe box are lateral thinking. Crossword puzzles are also requiredfor enhancing word power. Activities like Sudoku enhance themathematical acumen of the child.6. Ensuring Conceptual Clarity:Linkage with life experiences.7. Surveying:Activities on surveying will enhance experiential learning of childand help to attend PISA.

Report Making:Mastery on report making will help the children in tackling questions requiring various forms of expressions and also sharpening their eyes for details.9. Reference Skills:Ability to refer dictionary, atlas, bibliographies and encyclopedias, indices etc will make their task accomplishment faster and more accurate.10. Hands on activities:Hands on activities may include experiments, practical’s, projects, outdoor activities, visual and performing arts, use of geometry box, BALA etc. These may enhance child’s ability to express, adept, use his or her intelligence both emotional & cognitive and creativity.11. Question Making:Rubrics of PISA items are quite different from questions generally encountered by our students. Hence, they should be engaged in activities requiring designing question papers on specific learning outcomes and context.
