  16. The Basics about College Applications Refer to 4-Year College Admissions Flow Chart Apply online: • NC colleges - https://www.cfnc.org/ • Common Application - http://www.commonapp.org/ (nearly 700 colleges, 1 application) • HBCU Common Application - http://commonblackcollegeapp.com/ (apply to any number of 50 participating HBCUs for $35!) • Individual college websites Parts of a College Application: Application & Essay* Application Fee School Report* & Transcript SAT/ACT, SAT-II scores* *Only if Teacher Recommendation* Counselor Recommendation* required UNC-Chapel Hill & NC State DO NOT require a counselor recommendation.

  17. The Basics about College Applications Types of College Application Deadlines: Early Decision Single Choice Early Action Early Action* Regular *Some early action schools defer from their first deadline, but some do not. Be sure to check before you apply! Types of College Decisions: • Acceptance – Yay, you’re in! • Deferred: Your application has been forwarded to the next deadline. Be patient; more information may be needed. (i.e. 1st semester grades, new SAT, etc.) • Waitlisted: You’ll be notified if space opens up. • Denied: Don’t worry, there’s a better fit for you!

  18. The Basics about College Applications School Counselor Form (aka Secondary School Report)is the part of a college application that a counselor must complete and submit. Although there are still a few paper forms hanging around, most forms are completed online and ask for a counselor’s email address to provide a link to the form. Not all college applications have a counselor form to complete. If a college application requires a counselor recommendation, you MUST come in to Student Services and see Mrs. Stewart to sign up according to the deadline you will apply to. Please adhere to our in-house deadlines! Refer to Table of Counselor Recommendation Session (CRS) Deadlines

  19. The Basics about College Applications Student Services College DeadlineIn-House Deadline

  20. The Basics about College Applications Counselor Recommendation Session (CRS) Students must sign up for a CRS with Mrs. Stewart in Student Services. If a paper form must be completed, students must submit the form at the time they sign up. Counselors will communicate with seniorsto schedule a CRS. A CRS will count as a senior meeting. Counselors work from one deadline to the next(ex: Oct. 15, Nov. 1, Nov. 15, etc.). There is really no need to sign up significantly earlier!

  21. The Basics about College Applications Teacher recommendation formis the part of a college application that a teacher must complete and submit. Although there are still a few paper forms hanging around, most forms are completed online and ask for a teacher’s email address to provide a link to the form. Not all college applications have a form for a teacher to complete. If a college application requires one or more teacher recommendations, consider carefully who you ask. Most colleges want at least one academic recommendation. However, the second recommendation can usually be from any elective teacher, club advisor, or coach who knows you and can speak well of you. Some colleges even allow a community member to submit a recommendation, but not your MOM!

  22. The Basics about College Applications • Cont. Teacher Recommendations: • It is strongly encouraged that you ask a teacher who taught you junior year in one of your most challenging courses. • Ask teachers as soon as possible. Some teachers have limits of how many recommendations they will agree to write and you do not want to have to settle for a different teacher because you didn’t ask soon enough. Also, give teachers at least two weeks noticeof your college deadline! You want them to have time to write the best recommendation they can for you. • Be sure to let your teachers know which college(s) and which deadline(s)you plan to apply to that require a teacher recommendation and how their recommendation(s) will be submitted. • You can helpby providing info (i.e. a short summary of personal information, your updated activities résumé, reminder of class accomplishments, etc.). • Be sure to send a thank you note!

  23. The Basics about College Applications So what do you need to do NOW? Create/Update your activities resumé (add senior year) and submit to the front desk of Student Services by September 30. Determine what college deadlines you will be applying on and whether any need a counselor recommendation. If yes, look closely at the corresponding Student Services in-house deadlines on the table listed on your handout and make note of when you should see Mrs. Stewart in Student Services to sign up for your counselor recommendation session. Please do not to wait until the last day! DO NOT leave anything in your counselor’s box or door! Paper forms must be logged in by Mrs. Stewart in Student Services. She will deliver them to the assigned counselor.

  24. What to know about Transcripts • You will be receiving an unofficial copyof your transcript today. THE RANK ISNOT OFFICIAL! • If you see any errorsto your personal or academic info, please correct and turn in to Student Services by September 20! • Counselors will review all submitted transcripts, make corrections, and finalize transcripts before rank is run. Rank will be run Monday, September 26. • DO NOTrequest transcripts through CFNC or the county online system until after Monday, September 26!

  25. What to know about Transcripts All transcripts for NC colleges must be requested through CFNC.org. The Common App does not require a transcript request. You DO need to make sure you have signed up for a CRS for your recommendation by the in-house deadline if your school requires a counselor recommendation. If you are certain your school requires a recommendation, you may link in your counselor before your CRS. All Out-of-State transcripts (outside of Common App), for scholarships or other programs should be requested using the county online system. https://wcpss.scriborder.com/ Our registrar, Mrs. Stewart, will process your request. If you have any questions about requesting transcripts, see or email Mrs. Stewart at nstewart@wcpss.net.

  26. What to know about Transcripts • Know your high school graduation requirements! Counselors will go over them in your senior meeting. • If you believe you are missing a class needed for graduation, see your counselor ASAP!!

And ACT scores will convert to SAT scores! Remember:Most colleges that require standardized scores will SUPERSCORE your SAT and/or ACT scores.

  32. The Bottom Line on $$ for College: • Enloe Scholarship Bulletin Updated periodically throughout the year and is accessible online. Web page lists numerous additional resources! Enloe website > Student Services > Academic > Scholarships and Financial Aid • Wake County Scholarship Plus http://www.scholarshipplus.com/wake/ • Fastweb – Leading online resource! http://www.fastweb.com/ • Please don’t pay for guaranteed scholarship services!!

  33. The Bottom Line on $$ for College: FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid https://fafsa.ed.gov/ - This year, FAFSA is available Oct. 1 • Grants and Scholarships • Loans • Work-Study Jobs • Aid for Military Families • Avoiding Scams Commercial financial aid advice services can cost well over $1,000. Now, simply charging for help or information that's available for free elsewhere is not fraudulent. However, if a company doesn't deliver what it promises, it's scamming you.

  34. The Bottom Line on $$ for College: We have a financial aid adviser who will beon our campus in the next few weeks. The adviser helps parents and students maneuver the complexities of the FAFSA. The adviser will visit senior English classes and after that will begin making individual appointments. IMPORTANT! Scholarship offer letters/emails Please hang on to your scholarship offers even if you do not plan to accept them. We will collect and count all scholarship offers in April and then calculate the total for the Class of 2017. That total will be announced at graduation. If you are afraid you will lose them before next April, please bring copies in to Ms. Fluke at the front desk of Student Services at any time.
