  3. Make sure your thesis statement is specific, but general enough that everything you discuss in your presentation hinges upon the thesis. For the preceding pieces of artwork, you would be too narrow if your thesis ONLY focused on the historical context. Example: “David’s Death of Marat and Michelangelo’s Pieta both portray martyrs who lost their lives fighting for what they believed in.” If this is my thesis, it limits me because I can’t talk about the visual similarities as well. A better thesis would be: “David and Michelangelo used style and human emotion in Death of Marat and Pieta to celebrate the heroism of martyrs who lost their lives fighting for what they believed in. Now, in addition to discussing the historical context, I am free to talk about the limp, hanging arm, idealized figures, soft lighting and flowing drapery, etc.
