  3. Short history of the city The city came into being and received the city rights from the king Kazimierz Wielki on 19th January, 1354. The first parish church existed in Rzeszów in 1363. In XV century the city has been destroyed by fire. After the reconstruction, it received a lot of privileges. It made the development of city possible. In XVI century Rzeszów had well-extended administration. The town hall has been constructed in 1591 and the building of the castle started in 1600. In 1772 the city got in the Austrian occupation. It became free in 1846. The city started to advance. In 1858 Rzeszów has been supplied with a railway line, in 1888 first telephones appeared. In 1910 Rzeszów has a population of 23 thousands inhabitants. In the city appeared new important buildings – schools, barracks and the town hall has been reconstructed. The electric lighting has been introduced. After the Second World War, Rzeszów became a capital of newly-created voivodeship. In 1999 little voivodeships have been eliminated and Podkarpackie voivodeship has been created. Rzeszów became its capital.

  4. Churches in Rzeszów >> The parish website << Christ King’s Church was built in 1924 on students and teachers of Male Teachers Seminar. In the Second World War it was the Germans’ store-room, but masses were secretly celebrated. In 1948 the parish of the Christ King has been founded and it has been divided in 1970. In 1999 the church has been totally renovated. The Church of Holly Cross and the Convent of Piarist Fathers has been built in 1644-1649 in style of late renaissance and it was reconstructed in 1695-1708 on the basis of the project of architect Tylman z Gameren. The facade was built on the basis of the project of the same architect. The cloister building hosts the Rzeszów District Museum today. >> The parish website <<

  5. Churches in Rzeszów continuation Church of St. Venceslav and St. Stanislaus – former Fara Church. It was built between XIV and XV century and it was reconstructed many times. The church has got three baroque naves and a gothic presbytery. Its interior comes from XVIII century. Central painting shows crucified Jesus, 2 remaining – the patrons of the church.

  6. The District Museum The District Museum in Rzeszów came into being in 1935. It collect about 240 000 exhibits. Beyond the main department, there are other parts of museum – The Etnographic Museum and The Museum of the City’s History – its main attraction is The Underground Tourist Route.The District Museum is the former cloister building of the Piarist Fathers. >> The museum website <<

  7. The main theatres >> The theatre website << The Theatre of Wanda Siemaszkowa has been founded during the Second World War. Its first director was Wanda Siemaszkowa. She is classed as one of the most outstanding Polish actors. Presently, the theatre gives about 300 shows yearly and it employs about 100 actors. Once a year, there are organized three festivals: Rzeszów Theatrical Meetings, Rzeszów Carnival Meetings and Rzeszów Open-Air Meetings. The ‘Maska’ Theatre has been founded in 1953 by Izabella Melińska as an amateurish puppet theatre in District Community Centre in Jarosław. In 1956 the theatre received status of the theatre-institution. Presently, the theatre gives about 350 shows for children, youth and adults yearly and the number of audience amounts to over 55 000. >> The theatre website <<
