FULL-HEAT IN THE SMALL INTESTINE • Mental restlessness, insomnia, tongue/mouth ulcers, pain in the throat, deafness, uncomfortable feeling and heat sensation in the chest, abdominal pain, thirst for cold liquids, scanty and dark urine, burning painful urination, blood in urine. • Tongue: Red with redder and swollen tip, yellow coating. • Pulse: Rapid, Overflowing, especially in the Front position. Urinary symptoms, will be wiry in rear. • Key symptoms: abdominal pain, tongue ulcers, scanty-dark-painful urination.

  5. SMALL INTESTINE DEFICIENT AND COLD • Dull abdominal pain relieved by pressure, desire for hot drinks, borborygmi, diarrhea, pale and abundant urination, cold limbs. • Tongue: Pale, white coating. • Pulse: Deep, Slow, Weak. • Key symptoms: abdominal pain, borborygmi, diarrhea.

DAMP-HEAT IN THE LARGE INTESTINE • Abdominal pain unrelieved by defecation, abdominal fullness, diarrhea, mucus and blood in stools, offensive odor of stools, burning in anus, scanty-dark urine, fever, sweating (which does not decrease the fever), thirst without desire to drink, feeling of heaviness of the body and limbs. • Tongue: Red, sticky-yellow coating. • Pulse: Slippery, Rapid. • Key symptoms: abdominal pain, diarrhea with mucus and blood in the stools.

DAMP-HEAT INVADING THE SPLEEN • Fullness of epigastrium & lower abdomen, poor appetite, feeling of heaviness, thirst without desire to drink, nausea, vomiting, loose stools with offensive odor, burning sensation of the anus, scanty dark-yellow urination, feeling of heat, low-grade fever, dull headache with heaviness of the head, yellow complexion, yellow sclera of eyes, oily sweat, bitter taste, itchy skin or skin eruptions, sweating which does not reduce fever. • Tongue: Red, sticky-yellow coating. • Pulse: Slippery-Rapid. • Key symptoms: abdominal fullness, feeling of heaviness, sticky-yellow coating.

HEAT IN THE LARGE INTESTINE • Constipation with dry stools, burning sensation in the mouth, dry tongue, burning and swelling in anus, scanty-dark urine. • Tongue: thick-yellow (or brown or black) dry coating. • Pulse: Full, Rapid. • Key symptoms: dry stools, burning sensation in anus, thick-yellow-dry coating.

  11. COLD INVADING THE LARGE INTESTINE • Sudden cramping abdominal pain, diarrhea with pain, feeling of cold, cold sensation in abdomen. • Tongue: thick-white coating. • Pulse: Deep, Tight. • Key symptoms: sudden abdominal pain, diarrhea, feeling of cold.

  13. LARGE INTESTINE DRY • Dry stools which are difficult to discharge, dry mouth and throat, thin body, foul breath, dizziness. • Tongue: dry, either Pale or Red without coating. • Pulse: Fine. • Key symptoms: dry stools which are difficult to discharge, thin body.

DAMP-HEAT IN THE GALL-BLADDER • Hypochondriac pain, fullness and distension, nausea, vomiting, inability to digest fats, yellow complexion, scanty and dark yellow urine, fever, thirst without desire to drink, bitter taste, dizziness, tinnitus, irritability, feeling of heaviness, numb limbs, foot swelling, loose stools or constipation, feeling of heat or alternating heat and cold, yellow sclera. • Tongue: thick-sticky yellow coating, bilateral or unilateral. • Pulse: Slippery, Wiry, Rapid. • Key symptoms: hypochondriac fullness, bitter taste and thick-sticky yellow coating on the right side.

GALL-BLADDER DEFICIENT • Dizziness, blurred vision, floaters, nervousness, timidity, propensity to being easily startled, lack of courage and initiative, sighing, waking up early in the morning, restless dreams. • Tongue: Pale or normal. • Pulse: Weak. • Key symptoms: timidity, sighing, lack of initiative, indecision.

DAMP-HEAT IN THE BLADDER • Frequent and urgent urination, burning on urination, difficult urination (stopping in the middle of flow), dark-yellow and/or turbid urine, blood in the urine, sand in the urine, fever, thirst with no desire to drink, hypogastric fullness and pain, feeling of heat. • Tongue: Red, thick-sticky yellow coating on the root with red spots. • Pulse: Rapid, Slippery, slightly Wiry on left Rear position. • Key symptoms: burning on urination, dark urine, difficult urination.

  24. (TAI YANG STAGE) ATTACK OF WIND • Slight aversion to cold, aversion to wind, slight fever, stiff neck, headache, aches in the body, sweating, sneezing and Floating-Slow pulse.

  25. (TAI YANG STAGE) ATTACK OF COLD • Aversion to cold, slight fever, stiff neck, headache, no sweating, aches in the body, shortness of breath, runny nose with white discharge and Floating-Tight pulse.

  26. (TAI YANG STAGE) ACCUMULATION OF WATER • Aversion to cold, slight fever, retention of urine, slight thirst, vomiting of fluids soon after drinking, Floating-Rapid pulse

  27. (TAIYANG STAGE) ACCUMULATION OF BLOOD • Hypogastric distension, fullness and urgency, blood in urine, mental restlessness, Reddish-Purple tongue without coat, Deep-Fine-Rapid or Deep-Choppy pulse

  28. BRIGHT-YANG (YANG MING) CHANNEL PATTERN • High fever, profuse sweating, feeling of heat, intense thirst, red face, irritability, delirium, red tongue with yellow coating and Overflowing-Rapid or Big-Rapid pulse.

BRIGHT-YANG (YANG MING) ORGAN PATTERN • High fever which is worse in the afternoon, profuse sweating, sweating on limbs, constipation, dry stools, fullness and pain in the abdomen which becomes worse on pressure, thirst, Red tongue with a thick dry yellow ("old yellow") coating and Deep-Full-Slippery-Rapid pulse.

  30. LESSER YANG (SHAO YANG) STAGE • Alternation of chills and fever, fullness and distension of the costal and hypochondriac regions, lack of appetite, irritability, dry throat, nausea, bitter taste, blurred vision, white tongue coating on one side only and Wiry or Wiry-Fine pulse.

  31. GREATER YIN (TAI YIN) STAGE • Abdominal fullness, feeling of cold, vomiting, no appetite, diarrhea, absence of thirst, tiredness, Pale tongue and Deep‐Weak-Slow pulse.

  32. LESSER YIN (SHAO YIN) COLD PATTERN • Chills, feeling of cold, lying curled up, listlessness, desire to sleep, cold limbs, diarrhea, no thirst, frequent pale urination, Pale wet tongue with white coating and Deep‐Weak-Slow pulse.

  33. LESSER YIN (SHAO YIN) HEAT PATTERN • Feeling of heat, irritability, insomnia, dry mouth and throat at night, dark urine, night sweating, Red tongue without coating and Fine-Rapid pulse.

  34. TERMINAL YIN (JUE YIN) • Persistent thirst, feeling of energy rising to the chest, pain and feeling of heat in the heart region, feeling of hunger with no desire to eat, cold limbs, diarrhea, vomiting, vomiting roundworms, Wiry pulse.

  37. (Wei Level) Wind Heat • Fever, aversion to cold, headache, slight sweating, runny nose with yellow discharge, slight thirst, sore throat, red and swollen tonsils, Red sides or tip of the tongue, Floating-Rapid pulse.

  38. (Wei Level) Summer Heat • Fever, aversion to cold, headache, sweating, feeling of heaviness, uncomfortable sensation in epigastrium, thirst, irritability, Red sides or tip of the tongue with white sticky coating, Soggy-Rapid pulse.

  39. (Wei Level) Damp Heat • Fever worse in the afternoon, body hot to touch, aversion to cold, swollen glands, headache, feeling of heaviness, oppression in epigastrium, sticky taste, thirst with no desire to drink, white sticky tongue coating, Soggy pulse.

  40. (Wei Level) Dry Heat • Fever, slight aversion to cold, slight sweating, dry skin, nose mouth and throat, dry cough, sore throat, dry tongue with thin white coating, Floating-Rapid pulse.

  41. QI LEVEL

  42. (Qi Level) Lung Heat • High fever, feeling of heat, no aversion to cold, cough with thin-yellow sputum, shortness of breath, thirst, sweating, Red tongue with yellow coating, Rapid pulse.

  43. (Qi Level) Stomach Heat • High fever worse in the afternoon, no aversion to cold, feeling of heat, intense thirst, profuse sweating, Red tongue with yellow coating, Overflowing‐Rapid pulse.

  44. (Qi Level) Intestine Dry Heat • High fever worse in the afternoon, constipation, dry stools, burning in anus, abdominal fullness and pain, irritability, delirium, Red tongue with a thick dry yellow coating and Deep-Full-Rapid pulse.

  45. (Qi Level) Gallbladder Heat • Alternation of heat and cold with prevalence of heat, bitter taste, thirst, dry throat, hypochondriac pain, nausea, fullness in epigastrium, red tongue with sticky unilateral coating and Wiry Rapid pulse.

  46. (Qi Level) Stomach-Spleen Damp Heat • Continuous fever that decreases after sweating then increases again, feeling of heaviness of head and body, oppression in epigastrium and chest, nausea, loose stools, Red tongue with sticky-yellow coating, Soggy-Rapid pulse.

  47. NUTRITIVE (YING) LEVEL

  48. Heat in the Nutritive Qi Level • Fever at night, dry mouth with no desire to drink, insomnia, mental restlessness, delirium, incoherent speech or aphasia, spots on skin (macules), Deep-Red (crimson or scarlet) tongue without coating, Fine-Rapid pulse.

  49. (Ying Level) Heat in the Pericardium • Fever at night, mental confusion, incoherent speech or aphasia, delirium, body hot, cold hands and feet, macules, Deep-Red tongue without coating, Fine-Rapid pulse.
