  2. Basics of Debate Process • Resolution: a declarative statement that focuses the subject of dispute • Affirmative Team: Team that argues for the resolution and for significant change • Negative Team: Team that argues against the resolution

  3. Format of Our Debates • First Affirmative Constructive • First Negative Constructive • Negative Rebuttal • Affirmative Rebuttal • Affirmative Cross Examination • Negative Cross Examination • Negative Close • Affirmative Close

  4. Constructives • Define key terms in the resolution or that are part of your case • Lay out key arguments that support your position • These may are may not directly “clash” with the opponents case Round ONE is just the Constructives followed by discussion

  5. Rebuttals • Direct challenges to the opponents case and repair of your own case in response to challenges by opponents • Speak to the audience, not opponent • Critical to think and speak in outline terms! • Be sure to tie challenges to the decision-making process. Round TWO is revised constructives plus rebuttals followed by discussion

  6. Cross Examination • Direct questioning of opponents • Plan questions ahead of time • Think of some in “real time” • Use to “set up” closing remarks

  7. Close • Efficient summary of the debate • Emphasis on why you won the debate • Tie to stock issues or other key issues in the decision-making process.

  9. Quiz Prep • Talk with 2-3 other folks about readings • Each group can ask one question before quiz • Quizzes will be taken individually
