  4. The Problem We Address • The magnitude of the homeless problem in Los Angeles is staggering yet often goes unnoticed • Over the course of one year, an estimated 250,000 men, women and children experience homelessness in Los Angeles County • Approximately 73,000 people are homeless each night in L.A. • Fewer than 20% of the region's homeless can be accommodated in shelter beds on any given night • The homeless population is different than most people think • Women and children are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population • Each year, 40,000 families will fall homeless in L.A. • 40% of Los Angeles’ homeless are children • 25% of all homeless individuals are college graduates

  5. Changing Lives Volunteers People Helped • All volunteer: We are a true grass-roots organization with no administrative overhead. • Creating a connection: Interacting directly with the recipients is central to the TGS mission – and often cited as the most meaningful aspect by volunteers. • Raising awareness: “It's such a change from how it was before. No more having the urge to ignore or look away. It's just seeing what has always been there, a human being, a soul.” Maria, a TGS Volunteer • Meeting people where they are: We are unique in our approach of bringing aid directly to those in need, often reaching those not served by other means. We go to them. • Providing aid: Over 10 years, we’ve refined the contents of our kits to provide what is most needed to survive. • Lifting spirits: We provide a level of interaction and hope that many of LA’s homeless do not receive on a day-to-day basis. www.thegivingspirit.org
