  1. Beginnings of Civilization Warm-up Questions Recall- What was Pre- History? Prediction- What were 5 Important Developments/Inventions that led to permanent settlements? Prediction- What 6 things make up a civilization? Prediction- Why were rivers so important?

  2. Pre-History • Nomads- humans began as hunter-gatherers, staying mobile with no permanent homes. • Wild food sources- Animals, berries, roots and other plants. • Stone tools- rock hammers, sharp-edge stone axes and spear points. • Left their histories with cave paintings.

  3. 5 Important Developments that led to Civilizations. • 1. Fire: Warmth, Food, light. Harnessed around 500,000 years ago. • 2. Farming: Food, weaving, feed for animals. Around 11,000 years ago. 3. Domesticated Animals: food, hides, milk, eggs. Around 10,000- 8,000 years ago. 4. Metal tools: copper then bronze. Weapons, axes, tools to build shelters, helmets etc… 8000-4000 years ago. 5. Wheel and Axle: cargo, transport and trade. 6000-4000 years ago.

What makes a Civilization? • There are 6 aspects to a civilization: • Cities- where the residents live and work • Jobs and Skills- creates social classes • Government- Who’s in control, laws? • Religion- Monotheism or Polytheism? • Trade-bartering and $$$$, economy. • Written Communication- languages Egypt India China Greece Rome Mesopotamia

  5. Let’s Practice! • You will create a civilization chart for every civilization we study this year! • It should look like this (around 1/2 a page) Cities Government Religion Jobs and skills Trade Written Communication Draw a blank chart like this one into your notebook!

What makes a Civilization? • There are 6 aspects to a civilization: • Cities- where the residents live and work • Jobs and Skills- creates social classes • Government- Who’s in control, laws? • Religion- Monotheism or Polytheism? • Trade-bartering and $$$$, economy. • Written Communication- languages Egypt India China Greece Rome Mesopotamia

Practice continued… • Now that you have the blank chart, let’s practice filling it in! • With help from your pod, fill in your blank chart with facts about the present-day United States… Cities List 5 major U.S. Cities Government List the proper name(s) of our government Religion List 3 major religions practiced in the U.S. Jobs and skills List 5 important jobs or skills in the U.S. Trade List the way(s) we trade, not what we trade Written Communication List the official written language(s) of the U.S. I will give you around 10 minutes to fill this chart in!

The Importance of Rivers • Every Early Civilization began on a major River; Why? • Water for drinking, bathing, farming, animals. • Food source: fishing. • Transportation and trade once boats were invented. Can you guess which civilization we will study this year began on these rivers? Euphrates River Nile River Indus River Tigris River Yangtze River

  9. Pre-History Note Card Quiz 1. List the 5 developments that early human came up with to make permanent settlements possible. (allowed them to live in one place year after year) 3. Using JAGS, answer the following question using 3-5 complete sentences onto the back of your note card. “Relate- Why were Rivers important to the development of early civilizations?” (DOK 2) Hints: • Re-state the question • Use at least 5 examples in your answer • Look over for correct spelling and grammar 2.
