Engaging Learning Zone Tutoring Experience at Arlington Public Library

The Learning Zone, conducted by Sol Marie Arroyo at the East Branch Library, offers free tutoring for school-age children in grades 1-3 every Thursday from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM. The first hour focuses on homework assistance in math, reading, and writing, while the last 30 minutes is dedicated to fun educational games. Through tutoring sessions, I aimed to enhance student motivation and apply educational strategies effectively. One memorable student, Yasin, showcased a love for reading and enthusiasm for learning, making this experience both rewarding and unforgettable.

  2. I tutored… • At the East Branch Library • Every Thursday afternoon • Session 4:00-5:30 PM

  3. What’s The Learning Zone? • Offered through Arlington Public Library System • It is meant to be a way to enhance the studies of school-age children in grades first through third by offering free tutoring and homework assistance. • First hour we work on homework and last 30 minutes is game time.

  4. Personal Goals • To help students with their homework • Increase their motivation in school • Learn to work with different students • Apply all the strategies I have learned in school • To be a GREAT tutor and to impact their life

  5. About my student • Worked with a 3rd grader named Yasin. • Is a bright student • Very talkative • Smart • Loves to read books • Enjoys coming to the Learning Zone

  6. During our sessions • First time at the LZ I was a little nervous because I had no idea what to expect. • We usually always worked on math, reading and writing the first hour of every session. • When Yasin had no homework we read books together. • He was a great reader and always smiled!

  7. Fun learning • The last hour was spent playing educational games. • Game time was his favorite! He would always ask if it was 5 pm.

  8. Learning experience • I am more comfortable working with kids now then before. • I feel more prepared as a future teacher. • All students are unique and we need to be their to help and motivate them. • All children have different needs.

  9. Summary • I had a great time tutoring for the learning zone. This will be a unforgettable moment. I feel very good about myself helping these kids. Each day was a new learning experience and I have learned a lot from it.
