  2. What is public health? • Population rather than individual focused: water quality, disease prevention, health promotion, infection control, environmental pathogens, smoking cessation policy, alcohol & substance abuse, well baby programmes, dementia friendly communities, loneliness reduction…

  3. 1854: The Story of Turning a Tap Off & the beginnings of public health in the UK Broad Street Soho LondonA Cholera epidemic – had the first epidemiologist, Dr Jon Snow, find the source of the outbreak – using scientific observation – and analysis. Turning this tap off – led to a stem in the epidemic + contributed to eradication of unsanitary and poor living conditions, reducing spread of disease

Public mental health as a developing field • Uses the principles of epidemiology and research • Acknowledges mental health is part of the solution to tackling health inequalities • Examines the economic costs and cost savings • Emphasises the role of behaviour change, mood stability and resilience in improving physical health • Values the role of positive psychology in wellbeing and ensuring effective and evidence based interventions are in place, as well as assuring that people with mental health problems are getting the best support possible.

Clinical psychology & public health • Clinical Psychology Training experience ‘at the coal-face’ of one-to-one’ therapeutic work: collaborative attempts to understand and intervene with complex human stories • Team membership within busy services: building an appreciation of service challenges and team dynamics in the context of the various client groups’ presenting needs • Building on these lived and worked experiences to consider the bigger picture: commissioning challenges in mental and psychological health – a consideration of what the unmet need of individuals might be and the context within which they are usually understood. • Public Mental Health brings together the experience of and knowledge base about complex human need with the ‘bigger vision’ purpose of prevention, intervention and health promotion

Public Health wants to change the systemJess Mookherjee, Consultant in Public Health, Kent Dept. of Public Health • The Key is systematic and population based interventions that work at the level of the community(e.g. IAPT, Ways to Wellbeing) • Build evidence and policy to influence behaviour – in order to embed the ‘right thing’ that helps an individual. (‘it’s the public’s health). • Community Development and empowerment- go local, go networked (‘we are social and political animals’).

  9. Public mental health training across all 3 years: our aim • First year : Team policy report and teaching • First and Second years: Research opportunities in public health • Third year: 6-month long public mental health placement and further teaching

  10. Placement in Public Mental Health • Location: Department of Public Health, Kent County Council • Up to 4 trainees in 3rd year: 2 in autumn/ 2 in spring • 6 months duration: follows our current placement structure • Assessment mirrors current procedures for clinical placements

  11. Key competences of a public health practitioner • Basic and clinical sciences including research methods, epidemiological and statistical methods, health needs assessment and evaluation technique • Disease causation and prevention including health promotion, screening, communicable disease and environmental hazard control and social politics • Organisation and delivery of health care including health intelligence • Knowledge of the law as it affects the population's health • Leadership and management skills including change management and health economics

Components of the placement • Regular supervision with public health consultant • Regular adjunct supervision with programme staff • Work on designated projects currently part of Kent public health portfolio in relation to key competencies of a PHP & CP • Bring a psychological perspective to current public mental health work • Opportunities to work alongside trainees in public health from medicine, nursing and allied health + public health trainees • Contact with commissioners, county officials, MPs
