WLE - ILRI Dates 23 Sep Entebbe WLE partner consultation Preparatory meeting for 17-18 October. 16 Oct Addis Share Fair IWMI, WLE, CPWF, with support from USAID organize Share Fair event to reflect on, share and learn about achievements, activities and plans for agricultural water management and development in East Africa, it will focus on a ‘river of learning’ theme. 17-18 Oct Addis WLE Regional consultation Nile/EA Discussing regional challenges and opportunities that will inform the development of its regional focal program in the Nile / East Africa region. With potential research for development (R4D) agenda in the region. Secure participation of a wide range of regional experts to forge partnerships that can help formulate R4D priorities in the region. Keen to have ILRI on board, given its strong mandate in the region.

  2. Outcome 23 September 1. This planning meeting the boundaries and overall framework in terms of: a. Key Opportunities for Change and Impact (formulated in terms of change for people where water, land and ecosystems combine as key drivers) b. Key Drivers based on the 4 + 1 regional focus 1/4 Lake Victoria 2/4 Blue Nile Ethiopian Highlands 3/4 Sudd Wetlands 4/4 Nile Delta + 1 Entire Nile c. Guiding principles on how to develop the program in the region. To formulate opportunities for change in terms of people, their livelihoods and interaction with ecosystems, land and water. 2. An initial mapping of who is doing what and where in the region – now and planned – to be initiated before the consultation meeting. Mapping to be an iterative and live document.

  3. Focus 17-18 October a. identify gaps and additions to identified opportunities for change, impact pathways and guilding principles. The consultation group will then take these components further through articulation of the substance to each one. b. align with major development and policy priorities (reality and relevance check) c. further develop theories of change for the 4 + 1 d. form the key inputs for a series of concept notes (to be submitted to WLE – but not exclusively; WLE to potentially back CNs and “pitch” to donors) e. build the partnership base and create sense of co-ownership.

ILRI shoulddo 16 Oct Addis Share Fair ILRI shouldthinkaboutwhatwewant to ”sell” at this occasion, earlier work and future work. 17-18 Oct Addis WLE An Notenbaert, Allan Duncan, Mats Lannerstad invited. General idea to only have one participant from 11 CGIAR WLE partners, but ILRI given three seats. ILRI to check if we have some non-CGIAR partners that should be suggest to WLE for invitation How should ILRI frame its focus in the future work? Should we have ILRI prep meeting before to formulate joint thoughts. To lift the larger system’s perspective? The competition for biomass across the Nile Basin, and how it relates to Water, Land and Ecosystems – and livelihoods?
