  1. Any questions on the Section 6.2A homework?

  2. Now please CLOSE YOUR LAPTOPS and turn off and put away your cell phones. Sample Problems Page Link (Dr. Bruce Johnston)

  3. Recall the steps for adding or subtracting rational expressions: • Find a least common denominator by factoring the polynomials in each denominator. • Multiply each rational expression top and bottom by the missing factor(s) in the LCD. • Multiply out the polynomials in each numerator, but leave the denominators as they are (in factored form). • Add or subtract the resulting numerator polynomials and put the result over the factored LCD polynomial. • Simplify if needed, by seeing if you can factor the numerator polynomial, then cancelling any common factors.

  4. Example Subtract the following rational expressions. Note that 6 – 2x = -2x + 6 = -1(2x - 6)

  5. Example Subtract the following rational expressions. Note that 3 = 3/1, so the LCD is just (2x - 3)

  6. Example Add the following rational expressions.

  9. Question #5 on HW 6.2B: Be aware that the software expects any GCF to be factored out of the numerator. (i.e. in the problem below, the answer would be marked wrong if the numerator was entered as 2x + 24.)

  10. Reminder: This homework assignment on section 6.2B is due at the start of next class period.

  11. You may now OPEN your LAPTOPS and begin working on the homework assignment.
