The priest and Alban talked late into the night. What sort of questions could Alban have asked the priest?

Role play the conversation between Alban and the priest.

the dark ages

The Roman empire eventually collapsed.

Roman armies left Britain. The towns and cities, aqueducts, sewer systems, roads they had built, all fell into disrepair. Violence was everywhere. Education stopped. Diseases increased. People lived short, brutal lives, hoping only to survive.

How was Christianity a “light in the darkness” for these times?

Watch the video to answer.

The Dark Ages

st alban s cathedral
St Alban’s Cathedral.

Draw a statue of St Alban inside St Alban’s Cathedral.

Explain one way he would inspire people during the dark ages.

**Is it important to have saints to pray to?

  • People came to monasteries and churches during these dark times, for hope, safety, help and learning.
  • Monasteries, run by monks and nuns were the only schools, and the only places with books.
  • For 750 years, people came to St Alban’s Cathedral to worship God, and to remember his story. They tried to follow his example of living as a Christian, despite all the violence & chaos around about.
