Lucas9:51 - 62 51 Cuando ya se acercaba el tiempo en que tenía que salir de este mundo, Jesús tomó la firme determinación de emprender el viaje a Jerusalén. 52 Envió mensajeros por delante y ellos fueron a una aldea de Samaria para conseguirle alojamiento; 53 pero los samaritanos no quisieron recibirlo, porque supieron que iba a Jerusalén.

  2. 54 Ante esta negativa, sus discípulos Santiago y Juan le dijeron: “Señor, ¿quieres que hagamos bajar fuego del cielo para que acabe con ellos?” 55 Pero Jesús se volvió hacia ellos y los reprendió. 56 Después se fueron a otra aldea. 57 Mientras iban de camino, alguien le dijo a Jesús: “Te seguiré a dondequiera que vayas”.

  3. 58 Jesús le respondió: “Las zorras tienen madrigueras y los pájaros, nidos; pero el Hijo del hombre no tiene en dónde reclinar la cabeza”. 59 A otro, Jesús le dijo: “Sígueme”. Pero él le respondió: “Señor, déjame ir primero a enterrar a mi padre”. 60 Jesús le replicó: “Deja que los muertos entierren a sus muertos. Tú ve y anuncia el Reino de Dios”.

  5. Luke9:51 - 62 51 When the days for his being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, 52 and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, 53 but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem.

  6. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” 55 Jesus turned and rebuked them, 56 and they journeyed to another village. 57 As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

  7. 58 Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” 59 And to another he said, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” 60 But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

  9. Reflections on Luke 9:51 - 62 Reflexiones en Lucas 9:51 - 62 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. June 30, 2013 God’s call to us is everlasting. The readings today speak about God’s call to Elija, and his response to him. His great sacrifice sets the standard for all to follow. St. Paul says it’s all about being free to stand firm. In the Gospel, Jesus firmly decides to journey to Jerusalem. If anyone is to follow him, he must firmly leave all else behind, for the sake of the kingdom of God. Let us examine these readings.

  10. La llamada de Dios para nosotros es eterna. Las lecturas hoy hablan de la llamada de Dios a Eliseo, y su respuestas a Él. Su gran sacrificio establece el estándar para seguirlo todos. San Pablo dice que todo se trata de ser libres para ser firmes. En el evangelio, Jesús firmemente se decide a emprender su viaje a Jerusalén. Si alguien quiere seguirlo, hay que firmemente dejar todo por el Reino de Dios. Vamos a examinar estas lecturas.

  11. In the first reading from 1 Kings 19:16, 19-21 we see that God already knew whom he wanted to anoint. He tells Elijah to go anoint Elisha. “So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his mantle upon him… Elisha ran after Elijah and asked: ‘Let me say goodbye to my parents, then I will return and follow you’… Then Elisha took the oxen and offered them in sacrifice. He used the plows to boil their flesh and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah, and ministered to him.”

  12. En la primera lectura de 1 Reyes 19:16, 19-21 vemos que Dios ya sabía a quien quería ungir. Le dice a Elías que unja a Eliseo. “Elías marcho de allí, y encontró a Eliseo, hijo de Safat, arando con doce yuntas en fila, él con la ultima. Elías paso junto a él y le echo encima el manto. Eliseo corrió tras Elías y le pidió: “Déjame dar el beso de despedida a mis padres y te seguiré.”... Luego Eliseo tomo la yunta de bueyes y los ofreció en sacrificio. Aso la carne en la hoguera que hizo con la madera del arado y la repartió a su gente para que se la comieran. Luego se levanto, siguió tras Elías, y se puso en su servicio.”

  13. We see that Elisha was of noble heart. He left all things, gave it to the poor, and followed Elías. God chose him because he knew what kind of person he was. He must have been a man of prayer, worthy to be called to be a prophet. He runs to follow Elijah. He does not hold back. Immediately he answers God’s call. Something quite radical occurs here, anticipating Christ.

  14. Vemos que noble corazón tenía Eliseo. Todo lo deja, se lo da a los pobres, y sigue a Elías. Si Dios lo escojió, es porque ya sabia que clase de persona era Eliseo. Ha de haber sido un hombre de oración, digno de ser llamado a ser profeta. Corre a seguir a Elías. No se detiene. Pronto responde a la llamada de Dios. Algo radical sucede aquí, anticipando a Cristo.

  15. In the gospel of Luke 9:57 there is a person who says he wants to follow the Lord. He tells the Lord: “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus answers: “The foxes have holes, the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head.” He reminds us that to follow Christ we have to leave it all. We have to be ready to sacrifice like the prophet Elisha who sacrificed his oxen.

  16. En el evangelio de Lucas 9:57 hay una persona que dice que quiere seguir al Señor. Le dijo al Señor: “Te seguire vayas a donde vayas.” Jesús le respondio: “Los zorros tienen cuevas y los pajaros nidos, pero el Hijo del Hombre no tiene ni donde descansar su cabeza.” Nos recuerda que para seguir a Cristo tenemos que dejarlo todo. Hay que estar listo para hacer sacrificio como el profeta Eliseo que dejo sus doce yuntas.

  17. The second one is invited personally by Christ. “Follow me.” But immediately he lays down his conditions. “Let me go first to bury my Father.” But he said to him, “Leave the dead to bury the dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

  18. El segundo es invitado personalmente por Cristo: “Sigueme.” Pero inmediatamente pone sus condiciones. “Permiteme que vaya primero a enterrar a mi padre.” Jesús le dice: “Deja que los muertos entierren a los muertos; tu, vete a anunciar por ahí el reinado de Dios.”

  19. The third person mentioned in Luke 9:61 says: “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at home.” Jesus answered him: “He who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God.”

  20. La tercera persona mencionada en Lucas 9:61 dice; “Te seguire, Señor, pero dejame primero despedirme de mi familia. Jesús le contesto: “El que echa mano al arado y sigue mirando hacia atrás, no vale para el reino de Dios.”

  21. In my youth I saw my uncle Juan Elias work with a mule dragging the plow. So I can understand this parable better than had I not seen him. In the first place, he had to pay wholehearted attention to what he was doing. Once he had located the animal in the proper place, he would install the reins, and attach the plow. With two hands he held on to the plow. With two feet he had to watch where he stepping, so as not to go out of the furrow. On his shoulders he tied the reins. And with his mouth he whistled or spoke to the animal, telling it what to do. There was no room for distractions.

  22. En mi joventud llegue a ver a mi tio Juan Elías trabajar con una mula arrastrando el arado. De modo es que comprendo esta parábola mejor que si no lo hubiera visto. En primer lugar tenia que poner atención a lo que andava haciendo. Una vez colocado el animal donde tenia que estar, se le ponian las riendas, y se le ataba el arado. Con dos manos se agarraba del arado. Con dos pies tenia que cuidar donde iba pisando, para no salirse del surco. Y en los hombros llevaba las riendas. Con la boca le shiflaba direcciones, o le daba ordenes al animal. No había lugar para distracciones.

  23. If he did not discipline the mule, the mule would get out of line. It was a very strong animal. We all appreciated him, because without him we could not pull the plow, for it was quite heavy.

  24. Si no disciplinaba a la mula, la mula se salia de linea. Era muy fuerte ese animal. Todos lo admirábamos porque sin el, no se podia jalar el arado, porque era muy pesado.

  25. It is the same when we follow Christ. We must ask many, many times for the grace to be called into his service. It is such a privilege, such an honor, to be in his service. John 15:16 reminds us that it is the Lord who chooses us, we do not choose him. His love for us is unconditional, and our part is to obey him without conditions. Jesus said it very clearly: proclamation of the kingdom of God is more important then anything else, including filial obligations to the family.

  26. Igual con seguir a Cristo. Hay que pedirle a Dios muchas veces que tenga misericordia de nosotros y nos escoja para su servicio. Es un privilegio, un honor, estar en su servicio. En San Juan 15:16 nos recuerda el Señor que Él es el quien nos elige, nosotros no eligimos a Él. Su amor por nosotros es sin condiciones. Y nuestra parte es obedecerlo sin condiciones. Jesús establece con claridad: es mas importante anunciar al Reino de Dios que cualquier otra cosa, incluyendo la obligación filial a familia.

  27. Jesus set the example. When he was baptized he left his mother and began his public life. In Mark 16 it says: “The one who believes and is baptized shall be saved, and the one who does not believe, will be condemned.” Therefore, to believe and be baptized and live that baptism is very important. It is a decision to belong to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit (all the time, not one day yes and another day no). Total commitment, is what God asks of you !

  28. Jesús puso el ejemplo. Cuando fue bautizado dejo a su madre para comenzar la vida publica. En Marcos 16 dice: “El que crea y se bautice, se salvara; el que se niegue a creer, se condenara.” De modo es que eso de ser bautizado y eso de vivir su bautismo es sumamente importante. Es una decision a ser del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espiritu Santo. (Todo el tiempo, no un dia si y otro dia no). ¡ Una entrega total, es lo que Dios pide de ti !

  29. We are all called to holiness of life. “Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God am holy” says the Lord (Leviticus 19:2). There is no room for excuses. He who will not move, will be left behind. There is no such thing as being neutral in the things of God. “He who is not with me, is against me; and he who does not gather with me, scatters” says the Lord in Matthew 12:30. Let us follow the Lord. “You shall love the Love, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength ! ” says the Lord (Deuteronomy 6:5).

  30. Todos somos llamados a la santidad de vida. “Sean ustedes santos, pues yo, el Señor su Dios, soy santo” (Levítico 19:2). No hay lugar para excusas. Aquel que no se mueva, ese se quedará atrás. No hay tal cosa como estar en neutral en las cosas de Dios. “El que no esta conmigo, esta contra mi; el que no recoge conmigo, desparrama.” dice el Señor (Mateo 12:30). Vamos a seguir al Señor. “ ¡ Amaras al Señor tu Dios, con todo el corazón, con todo el alma, con todas tus fuerzas, y con todo tu ser ! ” dice el Señor (Deuteronomio 6:5).
