  2. Step One Choose a theme from Streetcar: • as time passes, losses always accrue • struggle to preserve (ing) personal values • the outsider or fugitive in a hostile group • the ambiguity of morality • the search for relief from the anguish of life • fear of dying and a longing to live

  3. Step Two Vertically, write the theme down the center of your white paper.

  4. Step Three Compose your poem. Your poem should, of course, focus on the play in terms of your chosen theme. You may either begin each line of poetry with one of the theme’s letters or you may wrap your lines across the letters as in my example:

  5. Why should I bother with The Matter before me? Will vEngeance fill the hole Aching in my chest? ANd what of her? DId none of my promises count? No, nothing really counts, I should just Give myself To the vast pointLess task And avEnge his death; Surrender my conscience, And embrace the Starless Night. ThEre is nothing to stay my hand: No fear of the almighty’Swrath And certainly no Shame will follow me into the grave OF EXISTENCE
