IMPORTANT IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ATTEND THE PROPER TUTORIAL I.E., AT THE TIME AND ROOM OF THE TUTORIAL YOU ARE ENROLLED IN CHECK YOUR SCHEDULE ON STUDENT CENTRE ON myUofC portal If you present and hand in your paper in the wrong tutorial or to the wrong TA, you will not receive a grade because your assigned TA will not have seen your presentation or have read your paper.

    3. Presentation Use of PowerPoint is optional Five (5) minutes in length Worth 5% of your final grade Marked out of 5 points

    4. Presentation Describe your chosen social phenomena or issue and why you think it is important Points to address: -definitions -background -who does this impact? -why did you choose this topic? Presentation Length: Approximately 5 minutes for example: definition if appropriate Backgaround – histroical if applicablefor example: definition if appropriate Backgaround – histroical if applicable

    5. Paper Due the week of March 16 (Week 9) 1,000 (3-4 pages) Worth 10%

    6. Paper Expanding on your in-class presentation, provide a sociological perspective on your topic Use your class notes and textbook to draw on relevant concepts, ideas, theories, paradigms, etc. that can help to explain or understand your topic sociologically You may draw on external sources (e.g. statistics, newspaper articles, etc.) but you MUST cite your sources in APA format

    7. Paper 3-4 pages NOT including title page or references Double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, 1” margins Tip: convert your presentation into a paper, but expand by using key sociological concepts used in class

    8. Paper Grading Description of social issue (as summarized from presentation) Demonstrate understanding of concepts, theories, etc as they relate to sociology A thoughtful application of these concepts to your topic Note: grammar, mechanics (i.e. spelling) will also figure into your grade

    9. Late Policy Presentation If missed, your presentation can only be rescheduled if you have a documented excuse e.g., doctor’s note Paper Penalized 10% per day late (not per tutorial) Arrange a meeting time with your TA to submit your paper (do not put under our doors or leave in our mail boxes).

    10. Group Work Get into groups of 4-5 and brainstorm potential topics for your presentation/paper While you are discussing, we will draw numbers to determine presentation order
