  1. The Southern Golf Academy(SGA) has been formed with a focus on developing Junior Golf in Dunedin, Otago and New Zealand. The role of the Academy will be to introduce young individuals to golf and to provide the programmes for them to become better golfers and even elite players.

  2. WORLD CLASS TUITION & TOURNAMENT GOLF The Academy will provide a supportive, encouraging learning environment as we assist these youngsters to develop in golf and in life. The Academy is suited to all young golfers (Boys & Girls) between the ages of eight and eighteen.

  3. Otago Golf has developed many fine golfers over the years and it is the goal of the Southern Golf Academy to develop leading players for the future. Skills & Experience of the five PGA Golf Professionals Over 120 years of combined coaching and playing experience Focus on developing the talent for young golfers to succeed

  4. SGA - WHO WE ARE Five PGA Golf Professionals with over 120 years of golf experience Alan Rose – Sharpies Golf Andrew Whiley – Chisholm Park Golf Club Duncan Bennett – Taieri Golf Club Neil Metcalfe – St Clair Golf Club Shelley Duncan – Otago Golf Club

  5. Individually we have done a good job with junior programmes at “our” clubs. As a team at SGA we can create a “world class” junior academy programme. Other PGA Golf Professionals will be invited to assist with SGA programmes. Utilize skills and services of many other experienced golfers and sporting identities in Otago

  6. JUNIOR GOLF Last 10 years - the same NZGA has approximately 8,000 youngsters registered Constant despite the Tiger Woods era and Michael Campbell winning the 2005 US Open. Less than 20% of Junior Golfers play regularly. The goal of SGA is to increase Junior Golf membership and dramatically increase the participation level

  7. JUNIOR GOLF IN OTAGO HAS STRUGGLED lack of consistent funding lack of cohesive planning and a reliance on individuals SGA will pool the collective resources, create and maintain high quality programmes, work with clubs, travel to country regions and foster the younger players.

  8. KIDS PLAYING GOLF Keep them interested SGA promoting playing and competing on a continuous cycle SGA to provide golf programmes that cater to young players which will recognise their abilities, support their learning and acknowledge their growth and achievements

  9. GOLF CLUBS & JUNIOR GOLF Some golf clubs have very good programmes. Complement club programmes and assist young golfers to develop their game to take to play at the next level.

  10. GOLF CLUBS BENEFIT More members! Kids start playing Parents, grandparents and friends are dragged along and also introduced to the game. They become members The cycle continues as they then introduce…….

  11. PLAYING FOR FUN Not all young golfers will have aspirations to play golf seriously but by assisting them to learn the game at a recreational level we will have greater chance of them being active in the game for the long run.

  15. TALENT IDENTIFICATION The 5 Professionals have all had experience working with some of New Zealand’s elite players. With SGA’s golf camps and golf tournaments talented players will be able to be clearly identified for the NZGA’s elite player programmes.

  16. SGA JUNIOR GOLF TOUR A series of golf tournaments will be established around the region Bring players together for regular competition “Order of Merit” similar to the Sony Golf Rankings assist Golf Otago and NZGA to identify golfing talent

  17. COMPETITION Taking the best and promising players and working with them in a competitive environment. In the future we see SGA Professionals being hands on in taking these players to regional, provincial and national events.

BRIDGING THE GAP The Golf Otago golf in schools programme is very good The JDO’s such as Melanie and Regan do a great job Focus on converting the school children to “active” golfers through SGA programmes SCHOOLS PE Programmes SGA can provide support in delivering Golf programmes to secondary schools

  19. BEYOND JUNIOR GOLF SGA can assist golf promotions to the full demographic of the golf market. For example in the morning Junior golf sessions can take place and in the afternoon Ladies Introduction to Golf classes.

  20. FUNDING OF THE PROGRAMMES SGA is funded by participant registration Golf Clubs obtain Grant Funding. Funding assistance from golf associations Corporate sponsorship

  21. GOALS OF THE SOUTHERN GOLF ACADEMY 3 YEAR Grow active participation of Junior Golf by 25% Have a 12 tournament junior golf tour throughout Otago A regular coaching programme so all clubs and potential golfers are catered for

  22. GOALS OF THE SOUTHERN GOLF ACADEMY 5 YEAR A male or female player from the SGA programme has won one of New Zealand’s leading junior golf events SGA alumni are active in Otago teams events and producing results that Otago Golf can be proud of.

  23. GOALS OF THE SOUTHERN GOLF ACADEMY 10 YEAR Grow active participation of Junior Golf by 100% SGA alumni have brought the silverware home of every major amateur event in New Zealand for men and women! This includes the Inter-Provincial Championships!
