Some questions? • Has reading become obsolete? • Has the national public education failed? • Has collection development moved in the right direction? • Have we shaped appropriated collections to local needs? • Do libraries really satisfy the users needs? • Are there enough titles and duplicates in relationship with the number of current and potential readers?   17. More questions ???? • Does the “just in time” prevail opposed to the “ just in case” collections. • Does the above impact on access to reading? • Virtual libraries instead of hybrid ones? Or traditional ones? • Do we need more of the joint-use projects of academic and public libraries? • What tools do we need to reverse the dramatic low reading rate? Grand Questions??? • Which international collection depth indicators are in use to control the growth and appropriate collections to meet the users needs? • If collection depth indicators are not used, has this fact impacted in the low average reading rate of the general population, when we count with a tuition free education up to earning a B.A. degree and have a fairly good amount of public libraries in the country?   20. Example of research in collection development at the University of Guadalajara • CCIES-CUCEA with the support of the General Coordination of Libraries of the University. Year 2002. • Currency of monographs in the central library of CERI-CUCEA. • Analysis of copyright data covered years 1900-2000. • Results of median age years of 1975-1979 • Provided a recognition of usefulness of research on collection development. • Fortunately situation has improved also in other state universities due to CONPAB efforts. • Collection development has obtained greater status and impulse. Collection evaluation methods & Conspectus collection depth indicators • Quantitative measures & Qualitative measures • Numeric value can work with a qualitative technique • Comparison of a subject collection with a similar one in another library. Conclusions • Urgent need to measure quality of subject collections in Mexico as opposed to other similar ones outside the country . • Need of a larger budget for research in library and information science in the country. • Institutions doing research in the CD field should engage in stronger cooperative work with experts in the field. Conclusions • Understanding the weaknesses and gaps of library collections in Mexico will facilitate the application of corrective measures. • Workshops in CD and more publications in Spanish are needed. IFLA plays a key role. • Good libraries can support the advancement of the country towards international competitiveness and improve the quality of life of its citizens.
