    2. Types of masters degrees at UoL (A) Tightly focussed traditional single subject.e.g. MSc Computer Science or Mmus (B) Multi-disciplinary within a broader subject area, commonly run within a single Dept/School (e.g. MA 18th Century Worlds, School of English). Future potential to have courses linked to named research centres (e.g. Centre for Marine Sciences and Climate Change), which may span several Depts. (C) Inter-disciplinary modular masters degrees with multiple pathways, involving several Depts and (potentially) more than one Faculty (e.g. Advanced Science)

    3. Examples from existing programmes Master (Research Methodology) SES inter-disciplinary ESRC accredited research training Master of Public Health Medical Faculty online & campus MSc Veterinary Infection & Disease Control Multi-disciplinary, international programme meeting professional and government requirements Master of Archives and Records Management [Arts Faculty] Highly rated (inter-) national vocational programme MSc (Product Design and Management) [Engineering] International student cohort with programme enhanced by visiting professors and European visit MSc (Microelectronics and Telecommunications) [EEE] Overseas students attracted by excellent job placement

    7. Progress this session Director of Postgraduate teaching (John Fry) Faculty PGT Co-ordinators Department/School PGT Focal Points (provide a single point of contact for SRAO) Working groups exploring pathways within interdisciplinary themes, across Depts and between Faculties PGT Admissions Group within SRAO

    10. China Challenges and Opportunities From Sept 2010 we will have a guaranteed market of 4+1 XJTLU students coming here for 1-year Masters programmes Their UG degrees are weighted towards Engineering, Mathematics or Management but there is the potential for broadening their portfolios to become global practitioners This means opportunities in Science, SES and Arts, which fits well with both existing courses and the modular systems we are proposing These are bright, highly motivated students with excellent English, who have studied under the UoL system for 4 years

    11. Next Steps (1): Over the summer Market research over the summer (new market research group in SRAO) on interdisciplinary Masters plans Focus group work through Alumni Board to test the market with employers Following the market research, feedback sessions and workshops to facilitate and expedite approvals processes Development of PGT web pages for staff, to put into one place everything you need for course development and approval

    12. Next Steps (2): Next session; E-learning pilots Multi-disciplinary MSc (Advanced Science) Taught modules available as supported VLE packages Flexibility and self-directed learning opportunities Joint supervision of research projects across the Faculty Part-time MSc with summer-school research project Provision of Key Skills menu (CPD, PGT & PGR) Communication skills IT and computer packages Designing and planning in groups Medical Ethics Statistics ..
