  1. Funchal is the largest city, the municipal seat, and the capital of Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira, in the North Atlantic Ocean, just northwest of the continent of Africa. The city has a population of 111,892, making it the sixth largest city in Portugal. Funchal has been the capital of Madeira for more than five centuries and is one of Portugal's most popular tourist attractions.

These carros de cesto (literally, English: basket cars), baskets with seats on wooden skis which were slid the inclined streets of Monte, guided by two pilots from behind, began operating in the late 19th century to descend the three kilometres to Funchal A tradition that goes back to 1850 and turns the most typical transport of the Island in one of the well know tourist attractions.
