  1. V.B.POLYTECHNIC NAME : Puri Vivek SEMESTER : 3rd DIV : B E.NO : 106550319108 BATCH NO : 105 SUB.NAME : MT SEMINAR NAME : Case Hardening

  2. INTRODUCTION : • It is the process of hardening the surface of a metal, often a low carbon steel. • It is usually done on the parts after their final machining. • It can also be done to increase the hardening element by welding or similar process.

  3. PROCESS : • Types of Case hardening 1. Carburizing. 2. Nitriding. 3. Cyaniding. 4. Carbonitriding. 5. Ferritic nitrocarburizing.

  4. CARBURIZING :

  5. ADVANTAGES : • Equipments cost is cheap and it is quite simple process. • There is no scaling & cracking of the parts. • No harm is created to surface finish in process. • It required less time for heating & can be done on lengthy parts. • Parts like shafts, gears, brake rod pins, screws, etc. are rendered resistant of wear. • Herd surface prevents from wear and soft (Tough) core resists the fracture.

  6. DISADVANTAGES : • It is difficult to control the surface carbon and the carbon gradient. • It requires greater degree of higher skill. • Handling of fire hazards and toxic gas is difficult. • Handling procedure is quite dirty and dusty. • It is difficult to control case depth exactly. • The difficulties arise while quenching the carburized part. • Carburizing trays are expensive.

  7. APPLICATION : • Parts that are subject to high pressures and sharp impacts are still commonly case hardened. • Common application of case hardening is on screws, particularly self-drilling screws. • It is used to increase wear resistance. • It is used to increase surface strength for carrying load. • To induce suitable residual and compressive stresses. • To improve fatigue life & impact resistance.

  8. CONCLUSION : • So, we can conclude that from case hardening is very useful for the strong influence on the surface of metal for it’s longer life. 1. The optimum combination of Mechanical properties is achieved at the carburizing temperature of 900 C soaked for 30 minutes followed by oil quenched & tempering at 550 C for 60 minutes. 2. The carburizing process decreases the impact (Toughness) of M.S. & toughness is decrease with increase in the carburizing temperature.
