Research - Types • 2 Classes • Velocity Type • Cup Style • Windmill (vane type) • Hot-wire • Laser Doppler • Sonic • Pressure Measurement • Plate Type • Tube Type
Research - Applications • Used in: • Sailing Vessels • Weather Stations • Turbine Control • Ventilation and Ductwork • How it works: • Wind is caught in the cups and spins the device, the RPM is then counted. The RPM is then calibrated against a correction factor thus producing a velocity.
Problem Statement • To develop a device that can test the mechanical characteristics of a cup anemometer and record and display the output to the user. Total test time taking less then 2 minutes.
Possible Solutions • Spin Up • Mechanically Grab and Spin • Use compressed Air • Use a fan • Measurement • Light Gate to count revolutions • Output of anemometer • Output • Visual pass/fail • Raw Data • Formatted File Output
Next Steps • Meet with sponsor • Gain scope of project • Model Types • Interface • Data Output • Brainstorm • More Defined Problem Statement • Gain a Sample for Testing • Delegation of Responsibilities within the Team • Draft a Schedule
