  1. ED209 Tutorial 5

  2. Reflections • How is the course going? • Any questions or concerns? • eTMA 04: • How was it for you? • Generic feedback

  3. Key Terminology Activity 1 • Get into pairs – one of you will need to take on the role of guesser and the other the role of tester. • Tester: Looking at the first side of the handout, try to describe each of these terms in turn, so that your partner is able to identify them. You will find some prompts here to help you, but don’t just read these out; try to put things into your own words! • Guesser: See if you can identify the terms your partner is describing. • Now swap roles. This time you will need to use the other side of the handout.

  4. Mapping the Brain Activity 2 See if you can match the labels on the right of your worksheet to the arrows on the left.

  5. TMA 05: Overview • Due in by 30th July • 2,000 words MAX Option 2 Adult brains show localized functions, for example with speech processes being concentrated in areas in the left hemisphere and with executive functions concentrated in the pre-frontal cortex. How does this organization come about? Is it because these functions are localized from birth? Option 1 It is often thought that language provides the concepts that we use to organise our thinking and knowledge. If that is the case, then it would seem to follow that young infants, before they learn language, cannot think or have knowledge. How has recent evidence from psychological research challenged this view?

  6. eTMA 05: Resources Option 1 • Book 3, Chapters 1 & 2 • Book 1, Chapter 4 (studies of infant cognition) Option 2 • Book 3, Chapter 3 (including readings) • Neural Networks Study Booklet/DVD • Media Kit Part 3, Video Banks 5, 6 & 8 General • Section on essay writing in Method and Skills Handbook • TMA guidelines in Assignments Booklet • Feedback from TMA 01-04

  7. Marking Guidelines • “Students are encouraged to refer to and build upon material and ideas introduced in earlier parts of the course …” • “Credit should be given to those who demonstrate an ability to structure their essay in a logical way, and who develop an overall argument, rather than simply providing a descriptive catalogue of the arguments and research evidence contained in the course materials.”

  8. ETMA 05: Activity 4 Decide whether you are going to look at Option 1 or 2 and group up with others who are interested in the same option. Consider what the main parts of your essay question are and write these down as separate headings. Now list everything you can think of that may go under each heading – research, theory, everyday examples etc. Consider how you could develop on each of these from a critical perspective.
