  3. Overview • Facebook is a social networking site • Founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2006 • Facebook users can: • Create a personal profile • Add other users as friends • Play Games • Article: Facebook In Privacy Breach

  4. Privacy Breaches • Transmitting identifying information • Issue affected tens of millions of users worldwide • Problem stem from companies that build databases • Anyone can look up a persons name from standard web – browser

  5. Privacy Breaches (Cont’d) • LOLapps shut down temporarily • Apps were sending FB UID to at least 25 advertising firms

  6. My Position • Choices and control should be put in users hand • Should find a way to limit exposure

  7. What does Facebook say? • Press reports exaggerate the implications of sharing a UID • They are taking strong measures to enforce privacy policy • User’s ID’s were sometime shared, however, unintentional • Knowing UID’s cannot grant access without user consent

  8. Cont’d • Developers not allowed to disclose user information • It is hard to fix the breach in privacy; are working on it
