  1. English 9Mr. Rinka - Lesson #29 Commas/Semicolons/Colons Romeo and Juliet Analysis

  2. Commas – Conventional Uses Commas are used to separate items in dates and addresses. My family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Monday, June 23, 2006. On Monday, June 23, 2006, our new address became 44 Oak St., Milwaukee, WI 53221.

  3. Commas – Conventional Uses Commas are not used to separate items in dates if the day comes before the month or if month and year are only given. June 23, 2006 23 June 2006 June 2006 March 4, 2010 4 March 2010 March 2010

  4. Commas – Conventional Uses Commas are used after the salutation of a friendly letter and after the closing of any letter. Dear Peter, My dear Jean, Sincerely yours, With love,

  5. Commas – Conventional Uses Commas are used after a name followed by an abbreviations like Jr., Sr., M.D. A comma will follow the abbreviation if it does not end the sentence. Nathan B. Willis, Jr., is speaking today at our school. Barton Williams, M.D., is my doctor. My favorite historical figure is Martin Luther King, Jr.

  6. Unnecessary Commas Avoid using commas when they are not needed. My brother, Robert, said he would visit me and stay for two days while I’m on vacation, but now, he says, he can’t make it. (Too Many commas!) My brother Robert said he would visit me and stay for two days while I’m on vacation, but now he says he can’t make it. (Better!)

  8. Semicolons Semicolons are used to separate independent clauses when a coordinating conjunction is not used. Mom went to the store, and Dad worked in the yard. Mom went to the store; Dad worked in the yard. The dog barked loudly, but the cat walked away. The dog barked loudly; the cat walked away.

  9. Semicolons Semicolons separate independent clauses when a conjunctive adverb or transitional expression is used. The rain fell all day; consequently, we did not go out. Sam is very smart; for example, he never has received any grade less than an “A”.

  10. Semicolons Commonly Used Conjunctive Adverbs: accordingly indeed also instead otherwise besides meanwhile still consequently moreover then furthermore nevertheless therefore however I love to exercise; still, I need to take some days off.

  11. Semicolons Commonly Used Transitional Expressions: as a result in addition that is on the other hand for example in fact for instance in other words The team lost the game; in addition, their bus broke down on the drive home.

  12. Semicolons In a compound sentence were there are commas with the independent clauses, a semicolon can be used instead of a comma before the coordinating conjunction. Sam, Bill, and Marie went to the movies; but Joe, Eric, and Sarah went shopping at the mall.

  13. Semicolons Looking out the window at the looming storm, Paul saw thick, black clouds moving overhead, and suddenly, he realized that the windows of his sleek, new sports were down and the rain would ruin his beautiful, leather seats. Looking out the window at the looming storm, Paul saw thick, black clouds moving overhead; and suddenly, he realized that the windows of his sleek, new sports were down and the rain would ruin his beautiful, leather seats.

  14. Semicolons Place semicolons between items in a series if the items have commas within them. We visited Rome, Italy, Paris, France, London, England, and Madrid, Spain. (Confusing) We visited Rome, Italy; Paris, France; London, England; and Madrid, Spain. (Clearer)

  16. Colons A colon can be used before a list of items after expressions such as “the following” and “as follows”. We will need to pack the following items: swimsuits, beach towels, suntan lotion, and sandals.

  17. Colons Do not use a colon before a list of items that follows a preposition or a verb. My parents need to shop for: food, housewares, and new throw rugs. (Wrong!) My parents need to shop for food, housewares, and new throw rugs. (Correct!)

  18. Colons Do not use a colon before a list of items that follows a preposition or a verb. The things we need to take to our class are: a pen, a notebook, and our textbook. (Wrong!) The things we need to take to our class are a pen, a notebook, and our textbook. (Correct!)

  19. Colons A colon should be used before a long, formal statement or quotation. Albert Einstein said: “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.” http://www.quotationspage.com/quote/9316.html

  20. Colons There are three conventional uses of colons. Use a colon between the hour and the minute. 10:30 A.M. 5:15 P.M. Use a colon between chapter & verse of Bible passages. Genesis 1:5 Exodus 2:1-4 Use a colon after a salutation of a business letter. Dear Chairman Stevens: Dear Professor Wilson:
