Computers in Healthcare Computers have become essential in almost every aspect of healthcare. • Medical Information Systems (MIS or HIS) • Budgets, inventory, patient records, lab reports, scheduling and general records • Diagnostic Testing • Analyzing blood, CT Scan, MRI, PET and Ultrasound • Educational Tools • Computer assisted training/education, interactive videos • Basic Applied Research • Internet searches and statistical data collection • Communication • Email, automated phone calls, fax
Diagnostics The major goal in healthcare and medicine is determining what is wrong with the patient. Diagnostic Tests have a real impact on patient care. ECG or EKG – printout of electrical activity of the heart Stress Test – EKG while exercising Echocardiograph – uses sound waves to get an image inside the body Computerized Tomography (CT) – computerized x-ray shoots pencil thin beam of x-rays through body from many different angles – gives cross sectional image of a body part
Diagnostics • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) – uses nuclear magnetic resonance instead of x-ray to create a cross sectional image. • Uses magnetic field to measure activity of hydrogen atoms in body. • Allows to see blood moving, joints/tumors to shrink • Positron Emission Tomography (PET) – Radioactive substance is injected into patient and computer composes a three dimensional image from the radiation detected. • See organ or bones from all sides • Similar to a model that can be picked up
Diagnostic • Ultrasonography – High frequency sound waves that bounce as an echo • Computer uses the sound waves signals to create a picture of the body part
