  1. 1. Some basic information that can be uncovered from the narrator's conversations and thoughts are... Curzon and Isabel are escaped slaves. "We were escaped slaves, half frozen and exhausted." Page 5 Curzon was a prisoner of war. “In truth, I am still a prisoner of war in Bridewell.” Page 3 Curzon is in a rowboat and it’s freezing! “I was sitting in a rowboat half pulled onto a snowy riverbank.” Page 3

  2. 2. Isabel • twists Curzon’s ear to wake him up. • Her face has a scar on it. “Her right cheek scarred by a branding iron.” Page 3 • Her eyes were swollen with fatigue. • She was Curzon’s friend. • Her hands are bleeding. • She freed Curzon from the prison. • She rowed the boat all night long. • Curzon calls her “Country.” • She has a little sister named Ruth who she wants to find.

  3. 3. The word “forged” is used on page 4 when Isabel tells Curzon that she forged a pass, but the river ruined it. In the context of the sentence, it means that she paved the way or made a path. In this case, the path she made or forged is gone because the water washed over it.

  4. 4. Ruth is Isabel’s younger sister. Isabel believes she is in Charleston and wants to look for her. “She was sold away to the islands.” Page 4 5. The statement, “This freedom could kill us” can be true because Isabel and Curzon are escaped slaves and could easily be caught and killed. They may not get that far because they have “no horse. No gun. No one to trust.” Page 5
