  1. The Mitigation Task Group • Rather than aiming at completeness, fostering fruitful discussion on: • Ongoing research needs • CO2e trading and methodology needs • Mitigation and wetlands • Mitigation activities outside Kyoto Protocol • Linking mitigation and adaptation Johannes Buckle Jim Jordahl Juan van den Broeck Sarah White Mack Suzanne Adams Priscilla Bloomfield Diego Rosso MaríaFlorenciaClavin Diego Rodriguez SaeedAl Zak Mohan Radhakrishan AyanBiswas Daniel A. 2. Guiding thoughts • It’s not all about energy: a big part of the mitigation effort in developing countries is through CH4 capture & flaring….  yet, we need to get developed countries on board as well, so feel free to add energy efficiency !! • The way we measure footprints, baselines, and project emissions vary widely whether we are within or outside Kyoto. We need a common standard for water utilities  now or never ! • CDM Kyoto methodologies help, but need improvement.

  3. Guiding thoughts (cont.) … in ordertogetthis ? • Need to balance wastewater treatment levels with emissions: how much GHG emissions are we willing to accept in order to get a pristine effluent? • N2O may not be as small as we initially thought !  research needs • When considering treatment alternatives, such as wetlands, C footprint is an inadequate criterion  full life cycle analysis including net environmental benefits (e.g., habitat restoration) will provide a more robust assessment: need to build consensus • Important to track what goes on in the USA • Work needed on establishing the link between mitigation & adaptation: pursue mitigation options that facilitate climate change adaptation. Howmuch of this are wewillingtohave …?
