  1. “But after they had rest, they again did evil before You." (Neh 9:28)

  2. Introduction • Read: Neh 9: 1-3, 24-28 • “But after they had rest, they again did evil before You." (Neh 9:28)

  3. Examples of Resting and Sinning • Children of Israel (Judges 3: 7-12)

  4. Examples of Resting and Sinning • David (2Sam 11:1-4) • Why did he not go out to war? • Is it proper for the King to rest while the people toil?

  5. Examples of Resting and Sinning • Era of Ecumenical Councils and Heresies • Followed the Era of Martyrdom • Church of Pergamos (Rev 2:12-13) • The name Pergamos is derived from two Greek words; "pergos" which means tower or elevation and "gamos" which means married - “married to the tower.”

  6. Dangers of Resting • Brings about lusts - Body/Flesh arises against us (against spirit) • “An idle mind is the devil's workshop” • Amish • Monks • “What do you do in spare time?”

  7. Dangers of Resting • Spiritual Duress (Compulsion) - تثقل • Doing spiritual activity, with “heaviness”, without a desire for it! • Dead car battery • Praying the Agpia • Going to Liturgy regularly • Monk’s canon

  8. Dangers of Resting • Loss of Christ and Eternity • Shulamite: • “Open to me…” “I have washed my feet”… “My beloved has turned…” (Song 5:2-6) • Parable of talents: (Matt 25:14-30) • “You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.” (Matt 25:26-27)

  9. Dangers of Resting • Loss of Christ and Eternity • “But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.” (1Tim 5:6) • What is the most common temptation against monks?

  10. Remedy Against Rest • What is easier to hear: rest or toil • “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life.” (Gen 3:17)

  11. Remedy Against Rest • Toil is sign of love • Christ showed his love by toil: • “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (Jn 3:16) • Motherhood • St. Paul – His love for Christ • “in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;” (2Cor 11:26) • How does a spouse show love?

  12. Remedy Against Rest • Reward for toil • A man who works 2 jobs • A youth whose parents promised him a car if he graduates • We place before our eyes Eternity • “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2Cor 4:17) • If we rest here for a few years, we will suffer eternally • Story of monk in El-Sourian Monastery

  13. Remedy Against Rest • Rest only has meaning after toil • A hardworking student • A hardworking laborer • Fake it till you make it • A person, who is truly tired/sick, says to himself, “Can I sleep without prayer?” • Story: priest who takes communion to the sick

  14. Remedy Against Rest • The view needs to change from looking at the hardship of the toil, to the blessing of the toil • We will see the blessing and joy of prayer/fast/praises/service, instead of the toil • Then we will be looking forward to it, instead of avoiding it. • “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2Cor 4:17)
