  1. Week 27-Night Period 3-ELA Regents Prep

  2. Do Now: Monday, April 7th • Find a seat with your reading group from last week. • If you aren’t sure where to go, ask Mr. Bruder

  3. Agenda:

  4. Peer Revision Peer: Your fellow classmates Revision: The act of examining work and providing helpful feedback to yourself or someone else. • Why do we need to do this?

  5. Peer Revision • Peer Revision allows you to see examples of strong student work, but it also helps you notice areas for improvement • Often times, it’s easier to catch mistakes in other people’s work before you catch them in your own work • No one is an expert writer yet. We are all here to help each other.

  6. Constructive Feedback • Feedback should be polite and helpful. You can be honest, but don’t be rude… • This is total crap. Did you write this in your sleep? • I like the way the author defined imagery, but the example they used seemed more like symbolism. I would choose ___________ instead. • Were you high when you wrote this? My two-year-old brother could form a better sentence than this. • The conclusion to this paper seems a little out of place. I would try something like _______________.

  7. Peer Revision Document • Step 1: Read over the Peer Revision worksheet you have in front of you so you know what to look for. • Step 2: Read over the Question 27 you have been given. You may make marks on the paper, or use post-it notes when you find something you like or something that needs work. • Step 3: Answer the questions on the worksheet and think about some suggestions you could make to the author. Ask your group for help if you are stuck.

  8. Reading! Goal for Today: • Read with your group: 47-52 • Complete the “personal response” portion of the reading log and the “summary” portion of the reading log.

  9. Do Now: Tuesday, April 8th • Work through the three steps of your Do Now with your group. • Read carefully through each step. • Find your word first, then create your sentence using that word.

  10. Agenda

  11. Controlling Idea: • The main idea an author is trying to develop within a passage or poem. • This idea is not simply one, single word. The idea is a full sentence that contains an opinion or a stance on this word. • Topic: Elephants • Controlling Idea: Elephants are the laziest animals on the entire planet. • Topic: Regents Exam • Controlling Idea: The Regents Exam is stressful, but easily defeated with proper preparation

  12. Reading!! • We’ll continue working with your controlling ideas tomorrow. • For now, let’s get back to our reading! • Reading Goal: • Pages 54-61 • Complete other half of your reading log from yesterday. • Text Response: Use one of the sentence starters on the back wall. • Use a dictionary to define one of the vocabulary words you wrote down yesterday/today

  13. Do Now: Wednesday April 9th • Read the poem “Descriptions of Heaven and Hell” by Mark Jarman. • When you are done, re-read the section of Night that has been copied for you. • With your group, try to answer the three questions on the bottom of your worksheet. Use your group for help!

  14. Agenda:

  15. Do Now: Thursday, April 10th • Review the four questions on the half sheet in front of you. While watching the film clip on controlling ideas, try to answer all four questions using specific examples from the video. • We’ll start the video once everyone is settled.

  16. Agenda: April 10th

  17. Question 26 • Let’s preview the graphic organizer for Question 26. • What are the main differences between 26 and 27?
