  4. Economic Uniting Dividing • Free Market Economy • Industrialized and Urbanized • Wealth of natural resources • European Euro is a common currency • Former Soviet Union was a Command Economy • Oil is a scare natural resource in Europe • Need for workers has been fulfilled by immigrants

  5. Geographic Uniting Dividing • Several, large peninsulas • Large agricultural plains • Many waterways are transportation corridors • Abundance of coastlines allow for many major ports • Iron Curtain: imaginary boundary that separated Western & Eastern Europe after WWII

  6. Social Uniting Dividing • Multiculturalism • Mainly Christian • Primarily English • Common shared history • Common culture of music, art, architecture, and literature • Immigration conflicts within the EU • Multiple languages still spoken • Issues with maintaining traditional cultures

  7. So What? • Since there is no longer a separation between Western and Eastern European countries, Europe is uniting politically, economically, geographically, and socially.

  9. Political • The European Parliament allows governments to function better together. • The European Parliament reduces conflicts between countries.

  10. Economic • The EU improves trade with other countries by lifting border restrictions, eliminating tariffs, and making development loans. • Free market economies in the EU promote economic cooperation among the European countries, especially with the Euro as a common currency.

  11. Geographic • The EU improves transportation corridors for its citizens. • The EU allows for people to move across boundaries more freely.

  12. Social • The EU brings diverse groups of people together to share common goals. • The free-travel zones within the EU allow for immigration from Eastern to Western Europe.

  13. So What? • A strong union of the people of Europe benefits and strengthens the participating European Union countries.
