Basics • Produced by the Liver and Kidney • “Target Cell”: Bone Marrow • Regulates platelet production (constant) • Stimulates precursor cells in the bone marrow to differentiate into megakaryocytes  generate platelets (essential to blood clotting) • No specific time in your life when more active • Under homeostatic control

TPO & Platelets • Circulating platelets, megakaryocytes, and precursors are covered with receptors for TPO. • Counts are high=most TPO bound to platelets • Counts are low=most TPO bound to megakaryocytes to replenish platelet supply • 1011 platelets made each day (No replacement besides blood transfusion.)

  5. Normal: 150,000-400,000 platelets per microliter (mcL) Red-Blood Cells Platelets

Too Much and Too Little Thrombocytopenia (lower-than-normal # of platelets) Causes? -cancer chemotherapy -certain medications -hemolytic anemia -hypersplenism -idiopathic thrombocytopenic purura -leukemia -large blood transfusion -celiac disease -vitamin K deficiency Thrombocytosis (higher-than-normal # of platelets) Causes? -anemia -chronic myelogenous leukemia -primary thrombocythemia -spleen removal A common fix is to undergo a transfusion. Plus each cause can make the treatment different.
